I have a cat and a dog. they were eating each others food. I put the cat food on my desk so the dog cant get to it, but i cant put the dog food up cause he wont be able to get to it. any suggestions? btw, i leave food out for them all day. i dont have "feeding times" because i am not home on a regular schedule, so i think it would be unfair to do that.

Like the majority of everyone here said, its not a big deal. And as Jimithy ™ said, they are both just mainly horse byproducts. But of course theres a difference in cat and dog food for certain reasons, like vitamins and essentials for that certain animal. Not a huge deal, if they both like each others food, why not mix both foods so that 1. they both get what they want, the others food. and 2. They both get their own food and the correct nutrients for their diet.

Trying to separate them or buy special collars to activate their food dish is useless and more difficult than neccessary for something trivial. Were already slaves enough to our animals(thats the way it shuld be tho), but anything other than this attempt is unneccessary.

oh and for everyone here that says leaving food out for your pets is wrong, is just mean. if they become too over weight than take action, but heck if the animals are bored let them eat, their cats! bored is their life! im sure over wieght pple wuld not wnat to be rationed food, and only take action when it becomes a medical problem. i more than anyone wnat my cats to live forever and be healthy but theres only so much a cat loves and can live for, and food is definetly in the top 5.

dont let your cat become obese or close, but a lil chub aint gonna hurt him or cut his life in half. treat them the way you wnat to be treated. and rationed food is not something anyone wants =)

Try out a different kind of cat food. You don't have to spend a lot of money on an expensive cat food that the cat won't eat when a cheaper brand would be eaten.

Plus, there might be something in the cat food that the cat is not getting but gets it in the dog food. It doesn't hurt for the cat to eat dog food as long as you supplement with a nutritional supplement.

Try Special Kitty from Wal-Mart. If that one doesn't work keep trying until you find the one that your kitty will eat. So buy it in small portions so you aren't left with a big bag to give away.

Separate them during feeding time, how long does it honestly take a dog to eat, what 10 mins max, put the cats food up higher so the dog wont get it, leave the cat food out, and just hold your cat or move him/her while the dog eats lol. Its not that difficult. I don t know maybe this is poverty feeding, I don t have electronic devices to feed my pets. - flip-

Dog training are excellent and very helpful to build you a stronger relationship with your dog. Read more https://tinyurl.im/vAJMs

After I started training my dog, he became very attached to me and loves to stay by side as long as he can. But just going to them won't help. You have to practice what they teach you outside of the class and you need to keep up with it at least every now and then after the class ends otherwise they'll just go back to previous habits. This course is a really good place to go for dog obedience classes. It get's your dog around other people and dogs to socialize while getting the training you need. As for electric collars, I would say to not get one. In my experience, they're only a negative effect on your dog. I mean of course you're going to need to correct your dog, but being positive and encouraging your dog works a lot faster and easier.

Every dog is different, so unless you have a german shepherd or a really smart dog, it might take a while to train her. You might get frustrated with her, but go easy. She's still a puppy and has a lot of energy. A backyard or somewhere to run will help her get rid of a lot of energy that might cause her to misbehave from boredom.

My cat sometimes sneaks some dog food, and shes fine. But if they do it all the time it might not do them any good. You could perhaps shut them in different rooms with there individual foods for a while so they get more familiar with the right foods.

Remember you shouldnt leave your dog for long amounts of time on its own it will get depressed and unhappy. Try getting a dog walker to come in half way through the day 2-3 times a week.
Im not saying your a bad owner or anything cos i bet your great.
Just a suggestion.

Dog Training is all about getting your canine to behave well, but some people do it for sports and other entertainment purposes. Some of the other reasons people train their dogs are:

It rewarding since you get a sense of accomplishment once a dog can do something new.
It is a good opportunity to bond with the dog - this is important for the dog and for the owner.
You can make money when you train dogs as a business or for sport.
Training the dog is fun and it challenges the owner and the dog.
Different trainers have different techniques for training their canine. However, some techniques are more effective than others. To learn about the best techniques, visit a registered dog trainer, talk to a veterinarian, or do online or offline research.
There are several types of training that you, or a professional, can explore to train dogs and these are:

1) Behavior and obedience training: One training that is universal is behavior and obedience training. This is done on dogs of all ages, but it is better to start when the canine is a puppy because as they say, it is hard to teach old dogs new tricks. Behavior and obedience dog trainingbrings out the best in the dog and it makes understanding each other easier.

2) House training: House training is very important and it should also start when the dog is still a puppy. House training is all about training the dog to have house manners and to respect your space. There are several techniques used for this and they include crate training and pad training for training the dog to 'go' outside.

3) Positive reinforcement: Positive reinforcement is a new type of training approach and it is all about rewarding the dog for good behavior or for learning a new trick. All animals tend to perform better when there is a promise of a reward. Possible rewards are snacks, interaction with other dogs, giving the dog your attention, or giving the dog tug toys - the reward should take into consideration what the dog likes because dogs are different.

4) Negative reinforcement: Negative reinforcement training approach has been used for many years where the dog is punished for failure to learn or to behave properly, but this does not work because it only makes the canine scared and causes it to lose confidence. Negative reinforcement techniques included beatings and electric shocks.

5) Trick training: Trick training is done for fun, by those who want a sports dog, and those involved in other entertainment activities such as the circus. You should choose the dog carefully to avoid frustration because some dogs are easier to train than others.

6) Teething: It is important to train dogs when they are teething because they are under a lot of pain and they usually chew on furniture such as table legs, shoes, and even wallpaper. Possible training techniques for discouraging the chewing are bad-smelling sprays on items that are at risk and giving the dog chew toys.

7) Command training: It is possible to train dogs to follow commands. These commands include 'sit', 'attack', and 'fetch', among others. This requires patience and there are various techniques of dog training that can be used to achieve this such as giving rewards.

A little bit of dog food isn't going to hurt the cat, except that the extra calories might be a problem. Most dog food, however, is not complete and balanced as a sole or primary source for cats (it tends to be taurine deficient, among other things).

So long as the cat is primarily eating his own food, and not getting too fat, a snack of dog food now and then is no big deal.

Don't Stress My cats do the same thing. The only thing you have to worry about is some dogs are very protective of their food bowls and can snap. And your cat might gain a few extra pounds from eating 2 meals !

Other than that don't worry dog and cat food is basically the same it won't hurt either one of them.

Good luck :)

You need to change your schedule a little. It is not healthy for your pets to have food out all the time.

Get their food out when you go to the kitchen to heat or have your coffee or whatever. Then shower, dress and prepare for work. Before you leave pick up the food bowls and put them away.
You can feed your pets again whenever you get home - neither will be greatly deprived by waiting for your return.

Taurine is an essential amino acid that cats must get from their food - they cannot manufacture it in their bodies as dogs and humans do. Without taurine in his food your cat could go blind and/or develop heart problems. Taurine is added to all commercial cat food - it is not added to dog food.

So the cat is deprived of an essential element to its health if it eats dog food and not cat food... The dog can eat the cat food and it won't hurt him.

OK don't do feeding times, do you have a feeding time, no you just eat whenever it is convenient right? It doesnt matter if your cat eats dog food. we live on the farm and my mom raises poodles, we have some cats outside that catch mice, we feed them dog food and they are perfectly fine. But, it will make a dog sick if you feed it cat food. so just get a pretty good sized bowl and just put dog food in it. it will be just fine i PROMISE. our cats are purrrrrfect (LOL) and they eat dog food. :-D
