I recently "rescued" a 14 yr old cat and brought him into my home with my five other adult cats. For me it was a good choice though I love kittens a lot.
It depends on your lifestyle I think. If you are away for many hours a day at school or work it not be a good idea to get one kitten, two would be a much better choice. Then they would have each other to play with and work their energy off. There is a lot of training and supervision necessary when you take on a "baby" - including many months of interrupted sleep time!
If you choose an adult cat, even a young one, there is a chance you will know something of its background and can judge better about its personality. There are many terrific older cats in shelters who are so often passed over for the kittens.

Kitten. Kittens can be a real pain, but if you spend a lot time handling them and playing with them when they're young they turn out to be very good adult cats. When you get an adult, you never know what kind of habits he/she is going to have.

Kitten is fun for a while because they are very entertaining, but I like them as adults later too, because you have a good bond that allows them to trust you and hang out with you. Getting one as an adult can take a long while to build up that trust in some cats.

I would probably prefer a kitten because you get to see them grow up. You get to experience their playful stages, which is fun, but then they gradually grow out of it, which can be a relief. Getting them young allows you to bond with them more. Either way though, cats are great :)

I would prefer a Kitten because they are so small and you can train them easier... and also you can have the cat longer.

Either, unlike puppies, kittens are easy to potty train, but they like to climb curtains and such! I think you should meet the animal and see if it is a good fit for your home. All my cats have had very different personalities. Find the right connection for you.

Adult cat, already fixed....female. I have a female adult that was fixed when I adopted her. She was quiet and lovable. The male kitten we got from my in laws is wild, mean and a pain in my ***. He ultimately got fixed but the only change in him is now he lets us pet him. Otherwise he is still wild, mean and a pain.

kitten, because if you want a cat for a while a kitten will live longer cause its got its whole life ahead of it, plus you can teach it cool stuff instead of having a cat that sucks a##
