Depends where in the USA you are moving to. Here in North Carolina (as in much of the south) the church is a strong part of the community, so if you feel comfortable with religion that is a good place to start at least.

In time, yout two year-old will be going to school. Schools generally have strong Parent-Teacher Associations which will also give you introductions at least.

Well, you can meet the neighbors. In the warmer months you can take your daughter to the neighborhood park and let her play. I'm sure there will be more parents there with their kids. Also, as your daughter gets older you can get a part time job or something and meet new people through work. There are many different ways to meet people, I just throw a few suggestions out there.

The best solution would be to let the Palestinians move back into their former homes and villages. I have nothing against those who wish moving to the US. Even better, give them all citizenship so they can elect senators and congresspeople, and throw out all the current crowd who've been crawling over themselves in their eagerness to kowtow to the pro-Israel lobbyists. Sad to say, by the time the US lets them all in, it will have fallen from its pre-eminate position of world superpower due to fighting expensive and wasteful wars that it was egged into by some key pro-Israel neocons, and the US won't be such a good place anymore.

Take your daughter to the park to play in the children's playground. You will find a lot of mother's there with their kids. Don't be shy, say G'day to them, and I promise you will get a smile. These mother's are likely to live in your neighborhood, if you choose a park near you, and at the start of conversation with them, ask them where things are, example, "Where is the best place to shop for new clothes for my daughter?" "Which grocery store do you prefer to shop in?", Tell them you just moved here, and don't know the area, and ask about where to bank at, what are the best restaurants, other entertainments, for you and children, etc. They will help you learn more about the neighborhood. I am sure you will make quite a few friends, and you won't be lonely when your husband is away. New mother's love to get together, just don't play poker with them at first, till you KNOW you will win! LOL, Good Luck!

Check in the paper for some "mommy and me" classes at a Y or church. Usually it's exercise type classes and a chance for moms to get out and meet other moms with kids. Storytimes at your local library. Childrens parks are a great way to meet other moms and kids. I always took long walks with my kids and met alot of the neighbors that way.

When you move in, be social with your neighbors. Take cookies or some sort of yummy treat to the nearest neighbors. Most people really apreciate people who are apreciative. Also if you need to have a babysitter for your child you can meet other near neighbors that have children too. OR you can find other near neighbors that are couples too!

Most Americans are very open and friendly. Talk to us on the street, at the grocery store, at church, at your daughter's daycare or school, anywhere :-))

As a previous poster stated, making friends with your neighbors is a good idea, too.

Get involved at your daughter's daycare, and you will meet and make friends with the other Moms.

Many people will be fascinated by your accent. :-)) My ex-husband is a Brit, and every time he opened his mouth, the questions would start :-))

Welcome to the States! I hope you'll be very happy here. :-))

Get involved with agencies like Habitat for Humanity, or take some classes at a nearby adult educational school, Vocational Schools offer this, if you are inclined to do so, join a local church or check into civic groups.

And by the way, welcome! :)

Just be yourself. Soon you'll meet like-minded people who would become yourfriends. There'll be a number of annoying ones too, but I guess you'll meet those types anywhere. Welcome to America.
