and they get along very well. They do not like to be apart. If I take one of them out of site of the other, they begin to call to one another and try to fly to find their "friend." This is cute to me. I took a chance and kept them in the same cage and it has worked well, but the parakeet sometimes likes to have her "space" going back to her own cage at night.
My question is, would it be prudent at this juncture to buy another of either or both of these birds, or would three (or more) be a crowd?

Getting another of either types of bird would lead to one of them being left out. If you get say, another budgie your first budgie would probably bond more closely to the new budgie and the cockatiel would be left out. This could lead to jealousy in the cockatiel. It could also work the other way if you get another cockatiel. However there are always exceptions as each bird has it's own personality. I wouldn't get any more birds at this stage, as they seem to be getting on so well together!

I have 2 cockatiels and 3 parakeets in my greenhouse when we introduced the 3 parakeets, the cockatiels reacted much better than I thought they would. The thing to do is ask your breeder or pet store attendant. they have techniques for making the transition easier, also.

now that they have become so close isay you keep them together but seperate them from time to time.i have a cockateil and she seems to always want to be alone.sometimes she likes playing with my cousins cockatiel but they fight most of the time.so i dont think buying another bird for them is a good idea

Three would be a total crowd with birds. They are bonded and will likely attack the new bird and kill it.

Don't change a thing. If you want to breed, buy a proven pair.
