Today my wife tells me a mech. told her I need a new rack and pinion, could that be possible?
Would the new one go bad so fast. How do you know you need a new rack and pinion.? Thank for you help and GOD bless.

You can crawl under the front of your vehicle with a flash light, and look at the steering rack bellows, if there is fluid coming from them, The seals for your inner tie rods are fubar, and your rack needs replaced. If you had a remanufactured rack put on, then it just may need replaced. You should get in touch with the original mechanic that installed it and ask if there was a lifetime warranty on it. If so then you won't have to pay to have it replaced, but you will have to pay the labor cost to replace it.

Are you sure it wasn't a rebuilt one? And did the first mechanic actually do the work he stated? That is quite possible, as its rather difficult to see the rack, behind the engine.
