I don't know the situation in Ireland, but in the UK 24hr drinking is allowed, but bars would have to apply for an extension to their opening hours. Depending on the area, and the likelihood of trouble from drunks, they may or may not get permission.

bars cant stay open all the time, there needs to be a limit somewhere, you can always have a taxi set up to pick you up when the bar closes and if you choose to drink more, leave beer at the house and you can drink more once you get home.

I was in a bar on the west coast of Scotland and was served after hours, and asked don't the police check up on you. The answer was yes they do, he's sitting over there!

we are meant to have bars all hours here, but we dont really
the places where there was a lot of bars beforehand are now open all hours and where there wasnt is now a nightlife desert so its not all good
can be hard to find a 'good' bar open all hours though
