I would ask him he would like to grab some lunch or something. Don't make is an official thing because you are trying to see if you like him. Keep it casual... if he says no then don't be bummed out because there is a reason why things happen the way they do. You are a very brave person and I appluad your efforts. It's not easy to ask a person out.... I hope everything works out!!! :)

If you mean HOW should you ask him out (and he is into athletics) I would suggest you discover what type of sport he likes best, and then tell him you are interested in getting into that activity. Then ask him if he can hang out on a weekend to give you some pointers in said sport.
