Without US involvement, China. China would start with a broad based missile attack, hitting the majority of Taiwan's military installations. The Taiwanese military would be ineffective. After that, a naval blockade would go up. Since no other party would be involved (assumed for this argument), Taiwan would eventually starve and submit. If Taiwan did not submit, then China would follow up with a large scale naval invasion, which Taiwan would almost certainly not be able to fend off.
With US involvement, the situation becomes murkier. Assuming for a moment that the US becomes fully involved as in the Korean war, the primary battles would be fought at sea while China attempts to form a blockade parry US naval battle groups away from the island, and the US attempts to form a supply bridge to China from Australia, Hawaii, and San Diego. The US may attempt to strike the mainland of China, certainly in the province adjacent to Taiwan, as well as other major naval installations up the Chinese coast, as well as major PLA army and air force bases. In the end, the Chinese would probably win, as they are much closer to Taiwan than the US.

China, hands down. China has an increasingly dangerous technologically developed military being built within the People's Liberation Army. This means amphibious tanks, diesel submarines, and worst of all missile technology is all being directed toward taiwan. Taiwan has a military force that is totally reliant on United States for ressuply and reinforcements. If China striked, Taiwan would be blockaded and any rescue attempts would mean sitting duck carrier forces.

Let's suppose Taiwan declared independence. Of course, that will not be recognized by the international community, but it will certainly make the major world powers very angry. So, let's further suppose that the United States says: "We told you not to declare independence, but you have done so anyway, so we are not going to help you out."
The PRC then begins preparations for an attack on Taiwan, and of course the Taiwan stock market collapses. Moreover, there is a run on all the Taiwanese banks, and a general panic in Taiwan. Next consider that the government in Taiwan is the Republic of China, and the constitution of the Republic of China says that it is the legal government of the whole of China. So of course, 99% of the high ranking military officers in the ROC are loyal to the concept of "China" and not loyal to the concept of "Taiwan."
So, for 99% of the military officers in Taiwan/ROC, of course their first thoughts will be what benefits can be gained by immediately surrendering to the PRC ..... (It would be expected that they would be awarded money, medals, a rise in rank, etc. by the PRC government if they just surrendered, whereas if they remain loyal to "Taiwan" they just risk the possibility of being shot or blown up or whatever.)
Hence, the key point to consider in a war between the PRC and Taiwan is that the ROC military officers in Taiwan are not "loyal" to Taiwan, they are loyal to China. Hence, in any large scale military conflict, of course they will be unwilling to inflict much real damage on China or on the Chinese people, and in fact will quickly surrender all their troops, personnel, equipment, etc., etc.
Hence, in a war with China, of course Taiwan will lose.

Have you been to Taiwan? Have you seen how such a small island it is? Furthermore, do you really think that the US will go to war against China over Taiwan? We can't even get the war in Iraq done and over with not even counting Afghanistan.

The first one to launch the nukes wins, in this case, Taiwan. They wont have to answer to us as much as much as China does, so there leash isnt as tight and they can do the must damage with just one bomb because of Chinas size

WOW,
FIRST, LET ME SAY THAT IT IS NOT IF CHINA WENT TO WAR WITH TAIWAN, BUT WHEN THEY WILL GO TO WAR WITH TAIWAN. NEXT LET ME SAY THAT THE U.S. HAS CLEARLY STATED THAT THEY WOULD DEFEND TAIWAN IN THE EVENT OF AN ATTACK ON TAIWAN.
WHY? WHY, WOULD WE DEFEND TAIWAN? BECAUSE THEY ARE A DEMOCRATIC SELF PROCLAIMED NATION.
WHY? WHY, WOULD CHINA ATTACK TAIWAN? BECAUSE TAIWAN WAS ORIGINALLY A PART OF CHINA FOR YEARS.
BUT THINK ABOUT IT, HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION...WHAT IF CATALINA ISLAND OFF THE COAST OF CALIFORNIA SAID THAT THEY WERE AN INDEPENDENT SOVERIEGN COMMUNIST NATION. YOU BET WE WOULD ATTACK THEM.
THE BEST WAY TO HANDLE THIS SITUATION IS TO AGREE TO GIVE TAIWAN BACK TO CHINA IN A SIMILAR WAY THAT HONG KONG WAS GIVEN BACK TO CHINA...NO, I AM NOT CRAZY...BUT, GOING TO WAR WITH CHINA IS CRAZY.
LET ME EXPLAIN...
1.CHINA IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE LARGEST OR THE LARGEST ECONOMIC COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD IN THE FUTURE.
2. CHINA IS NO LONGER GOING TO BE COMMUNISTIC IN THE FUTURE, THEY WILL REALIZE IN THERE OWN SOCIAL EVOLUTION THAT DEMOCRACY AND SOCIALISM WILL BE A BETTER WAY OF LIVING. YES THIS WILL TAKE A GENERATION OR MAYBE TWO, BUT IT WILL EVENTUALLY MANIFEST ITSELF WITH TIME.
3. IF WE MAKE OURSELVES ENEMIES WITH CHINA, WHO HAS THE WORLDS LARGEST NAVY, AIR FORCE AND ARMY WE BETTER HOPE THAT OUR TECHNOLOGICAL PROWESS IS A MATCH FOR THEIR NUMBERS, OR ELSE WE WILL ELIMINATE THE THREAT WITH NUCLEAR ANNHILATION...HOW HORRIBLE WOULD THAT BE AND WE THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES AT THIS TIME WOULD PROBABLY BE UNTOUCHED BY THEIR NUKES, THEY ONLY HAVE SEVERAL THAT CAN HIT US AND WE NOW HAVE WEAPONS THAT COULD DETER THAT THREAT.
CONCLUSION:
THE U.S.A. WOULD WIN WITH MOST LIKELY HUGE LOSSES.
BUT, CHINA IS CATCHING UP ON THE TECHNOLOGICAL GAME AND WHO IS TO SAY IN SAY 10 YEARS.

China. And given Americas current affinity for Iraqi's, I doubt we would get involved. Or we might get unilaterally involved and in 3 to 4 years all of the liberals will forget that they voted to go in and demand that we pull out of yet another "Vietnam".
