i just recently bought a shotgun, its a winchester model 1300. i bought some ammo for it, but it turned out to be magnum shells. is it safe to use magnum shells in a winchester 1300, or will it just explode in my face? also, can i use magnum slugs in it?

some where on the gun (barrel or underneth) it will have what the barrels are proofed too. If its proofed to 1900ft lbs thats per square inc or over the its magnum proof. I would not put a mag through it till i was certain. Personaly when using a slug i like to have an more upen choke in than 3quater or full. Persumabley the modle is multi choked

Shell size is usually marked somewhere on it.
It will handle Magnum. Magnum's bandied about lightly in shotgun world, and is not like using a .357 magnum in a 38 special handgun.

As long as you use soft lead (foster type) slugs - magnums are fine.
Do not use ones that say for rifled barrels only.

You need to see which slugs your gun "likes".
Mine doesn't line Brennke, Remington or Federals.
Winchesters are OK.

Active was an all-plastic red shell. It sold for $1.79 for box of 5 (in either 2-3/4 or 3"). I bought some at Gamemasters. It loved them and shot 2" groups at 50 yards (smooth-bore full-chock).
I went back and bought about 6 more boxes last year.
I wish I'd bought more, as they don't have them anymore.

Trying out KO's now as they were $1.49 a box and I've seen them more than one place. They're only doing about 6" groups, but that's ok ... I was mainly using the rifle for deer and was letting my friend use the shotgun - and I still have a couple of boxes of Active's left.

If it a new model 1300 it should take either the 3" mags or the 2 3/4" shells, unless it is a slug barrel only then all it will take are the mags.

alright a cpl of things. first look on the side of the barrel and see what its chambered for. second if its semi auto which i think it is, then no it will not blow up in ur face. the only thing that will happen is that it will not completely cycle the action, thus not reloading a fresh shell. now bout the slugs first off u need to know what kind of choke u have in it cuz if its to small then u'll blow out the choke.

chances are you can shoot magnum shells but read your owners manual also you do not want to shoot rifled slugs in a smooth bore barrel

it depends on your gun look on the barell and if it says chambered for 2 and 3/4 inch mag or 3 in mag you should be fine
