Measuring a pie plate???

if you took a ruler to measure a pie dish, would you measure the bottom or the top (the top is wider)? Like, how can I tell a 8 inch from a 9 inch???

Measure the top, rim to opposite rim.

it usually says on the bottom of the pan.....but if not then measure the top
