However the 1960's and 1970's are regarded as the nadir for Château Margaux. Its "First Growth" status precipitated a lackadaisical attitude towards the quality its wine, adopting a misguided views that status alone would guarantee its reputations. One critic who denounced the inviolable wine of Château Margaux was budding wine-critic Robert Parker, who publically lambasted vintages between 1961 and 1977. (That said, do not ignore the wonderful 1966 but do ignore the non-vintage Château Margaux made by blending the execrable 1963, 1964 and 1965 vintages.)

Margaux was effectively resting on its laurels. Of course they were not the only culprit during this period when poor wines were endemic and there were plenty of other reasons why such lamentable wines were made during this period. But Margaux was the most prominent and had further to fall. Pierre Ginestet sold the estate in 1976 following years of economic malaise and disastrous vintages and having rebuffed an offer from the American conglomerate "National Distillers" it was sold to the French supermarket group: "Félix Potin" whose Greek owner, André Mentzelopoulos had a major sharehold in the "Nicolas" wine company.

A succession of superlative wines from 1978 onwards prove that the efforts yielded tangible results and Château Margaux could rightfully reclaim its inviolable status as a First Growth

The largest private wine auction website is a great place to sell your wine with a reasonable sales fee. Created after ebay outlawed the sale of wine on their site. Put a small opening bid and let the market dictate the value. It is not a very good vintage for Margaux. The 1983 is excellent.
