I want to project the pictures off a DVD onto a screen ( so that a room full of people can see the screen ) what is the cheapest way I can do it as I have a very limited buget. For example has a standard 30 odd quid dvd player got the capacity to output via a projector or do I need to play the dvd through a PC and what type of projector do I need ?

Any DVD player can output to a projector (although you will need an amplifier and speakers for sound). To get the best picture connect the DVD player over component (3 separate RCA connectors) -- if available -- or S-video (a DIN connector) rather than composite (single yellow RCA connector).

That said, projectors capable of giving reasonable image quality will be between $500 - $800 minimum (new), or a bit less used.

To get the best picture from standard DVDs you need a progressive DVD player with up-conversion capability to 720p/1080i and a HD projector (720x1280 resolution). Somewhat lower quality, but still acceptable, can be obtained with a lower resolution projector (480x854 resolution), and in this case up-conversion is not necessary.

A screen is not essential (a bare white wall will do), although better results can be expected with a good screen or even a specially painted wall optimized for video ($50 for paint, smooth roller and some effort).

most projectors are high $700s on up.
most of them have video (DVD output) as well as VGA (computer) input connectors.

For a one time occasion, you may try to rent one.

You will need a separate audio/stereo set-up (at least good boom-box with stereo input - make sure it's got one)
