So this may sound like a silly question. Basically, my wife and I are about to start talking with our 18 month old more about going to the potty and wanted to know what words people used most commonly. Are "pee" and "poop" the winners? Thanks.

I have to say..we are a "pee" and "Poop" house. There's even a book called "Everybody poops!" My Doctor says it's best to use the technical terms for things but honestly..I'm 36 and I find myself saying "I have to pee" so to me that is just me using the word I use and not dumming it down. I remember when I was growing up we said "Number one" and "Number 2" but at least saying "pee" and "poop" is closer to the real words! Good luck on that potty training, by the way--you guys have more energy then me!

yes i would say they are the winners.
i applause you just because you say you are talking with her about it. She understands more than you think.
ok so 'wise guy 'doesnt wanna make up names....then why 'stinky'?
come on just say it like it is....pee/pee pee/poop/poopie. We talk of potty, big people potty/ big people's potty is called toilet.
i believe in Not teaching my kids 'baby' words that they will just have to forget about and stop using when they are 'big kids'
like baba for bottle, come on the word is bottle! why teach your child the word baba????? there is no such word.....the word is bottle people.
if they have to go potty ,call it 'potty', when they progress to big people potty its called a toilet. or in otherwords bathroom/washroom etc. but whatever is used by your household members on a regular basis is what you should call all bathroom activities.
As for embarassing remarks by kids in public....if they say they gotta poop, and some bystander gives you a look then I would be offended by the look!!! that is toddler language, and if an adult was offended I would have to have a serious talk with them why they are spending so much time paying attention to the words my "child" uses.
I believe in speaking with my babies/toddlers/children/ as if they were another adult.....Always asuming they understand (understandably they dont) but they are sponges.
Did you know that BY THE TIME A CHILD HAS REACHED 5 YEARS OF AGE THEY HAVE LEARNED 75% OR MORE OF""""""EVERYTHING""""""" THEY WILL EVER LEARN IN THEIR WHOLE LIFETIME.
SOMETHING TO CONSIDER.

Good question, we just said " tinkle" and "poo-poo"

But with my one of my kids he said it "winkie and Moo moo" so we had to change to pee and poop.

Now, if you wanna know about bad parents, our neighbors just tell their kids to say piss and s*hit! I do not encourage this!

And yes, they probably will yell it out in public. Heck, last night my two year old girl started screaming "I GOTTA GO TO THE TOILET AND TAKE A POOP AND A PEE RIGHT NOW!" Everybody at pizza hut was staring at us, so make sure you don't tell them anything to bad!

there is no reason to make up little baby words. Kids understand more then u think and catch on quick. Talk to them normal and just think how much u are educating them with real grown up words. This is true not only with bathroon vocab but in real life. whild driving down the road, point out things and name them ect.... they soak it up like a sponge. Good Luck

In terms of bodily functions, we used pee and "BM". "BM" makes an abbreviated standard reference for children without waxing rhapsodic. Pee is not the more formal urinate, but is a standard reference, even for adults.

As for body parts themselves, we always used penis, testicles, vagina, vulva, etc. Children may as well get a healthy and proper sense of their bodies from the start. Western society has warped enough perspectives on sex and genitals without adding to the mess with a new generation.

Why make up names?

I always used stinky and pee pee.

He is not ready for bowel movement or urinate yet.

When my child was in two year old pre-school he was the only one that knew he had a penis. Go figure!

My parents used tinkle and poo. My inlaws used tee tee and poop. It depends on your preferences. Whatever you use will be fine as long as you are consistent in your wording. Changing back and forth may confuse your little one.

Good luck!

I had my kids say they needed to go potty, and tinkle and poo were for specifics.

Whatever you decide on, make sure it isn't something that will embarrass you in public, because it will...at some point...inevitably be announced loudly in public by your child! :)
