Since what they call "canned yams" are actually sweet potatoes and not the "provisions" you get in the Caribbean (real yams are rock hard, pale fleshed, dark skinned monsters), go for it.

YES, sweet potatoes and yams are EXACTLY the same thing. The name is regional or, for some, indicate different ways of preparation. There ARE several types of sweet potatoes, and in some areas, one may be known as a yam rather than a sweet potato, but in all my culinary training, including culinary art school, I have never heard any conclusive evidence that there is any other difference.
That being said, canned yams are boiled, rather than baked, so there will be a texture and flavor difference from recipes that recommend you bake the sweet potatoes, which is my preferred way of cooking any potato since it tenderizes and sweetens, converting some of the starches into sugars.
I suggest that you completely drain the fluid and whip the potatoes to aerate them before adding them to the other ingredients if you prefer a fluffier pie filling.
Oh, BTW, I am referring to yams or sweet potatoes canned in liquid, not in a light sauce. If the can contains a sauce, there will be a slight flavor difference in the results, but not so most people would notice.

Yes, the "canned yams" aren't really yams at all, but sweet potatoes. Yams and sweet potatoes are not really related. Check out this site, it will explain the difference. http://homecooking.about.com/od/howtocookvegetables/a/sweetpotatodiff.htm
Here's a great recipe for sweet potato pie, using canned stuff.
9" pie
1 3/4 c. strained mashed cooked yams or sweet potatoes
3 eggs
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. butter
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. milk
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
Heat oven to 425 degrees (hot). Beat all ingredients together with mixer or rotary beater. Pour into pastry lined pie pan. Bake 45-55 minutes or until a silver knife inserted 1 inch from side of filling comes out clean.

Yes but you will get an entirely different product - it will be more akin to Pumpkin Pie than Sweet potato since they are very different tubers. The density will be different too the yam pie will be lighter and not as rich.

You can broil the top for a minute or so to melt and crystalize the brown sugar topping. Remove from the oven. Let sit for at least 15 minutes before cutting.
