Been there. Grew up with family of 6 in a one bedroom cabin. In our case we knew after about 7 or 8 years old that there was no Santa but that did not stop us from appreciating the meaning of the season. We kept the facade of Santa alive for the two littlest ones for as long as they accepted it. Eventually friends at school burst their bubble too.

Kids who don't have a lot (if anything) tend to be grateful for anything that is above and beyond the barest minimum. Being able to eat until you were ready to burst was a rarity, though it seems to be a tradition for many people to do so and pass out infront of a football game on TV.

We used to go help pass out food bags and serve meals for the homeless on holidays because it meant we would get to eat too. Also it helped to remind us that no matter how bad things seem there is always someone else who has it worse. Atleast we had a roof over our heads.
Being poor or rich does not matter as long as you appreciate what you DO have.

Well, working in that type of environment, I can tell you these children learn at a young age to be grateful for what they get. They don't have temper tantrums because they won't be getting a Wii. They think of Santa in as a "God" so to speak. And some of the children ask Santa for something they need-like food.

That is very sad, but there is something that the parrents can do too! there is toys for tots, and places like the salvation army, where parents can go who cant afford stuff for christmas where they can pick something out for free. i think that is really nice of people to do that. but christmas isnt about presents, its about being a family together. it is really sad i dont know how those kids feel to wake up on christmas morning with no presents.

They probably face the harsh reality at a young age that he does not exist.
