Hi,
The best bet is for now to buy an extendable lead. This way they can can run around but not run off.
As far as the training comes into it. Once you have the extendable leads carry their favourite treat in your pocket and at random intervals call them back to you when they come (Even if that means using the lead to make them give them a treat.
This enforces the good behaviour. Warning though never call them back without a reward as they will soon learn this is a trick and all your hard work will be undone.
The quicker they come back the better the reward. Big fuss.
Hard work but you can do it. Good luck Michelle Northamptonshire. :-)

Other dogs should never be a problem and you are very right to check for other dogs even so, especially in the dark because even dogs can make each other jump!
To start with, I would sit down and watch your favourite tv program. Bring your dogs in the room with you but don't say anything to them, just have some extra tasty treats nearby. Apparently focus your attention on your tv program but every time a dog looks at you, hand over a treat (very small ones) and praise for a few seconds. Then go back to the tv. Your dogs will eventually learn that to get something nice they have to look at you. When they figure it out, move to a bigger space, a backyard, back garden it's up to you. In the bigger space, add a command that they havent learnt before (if you normally take wlaks in a large space use some sort of whistle to prevent sore throats!). When your dogs look at you, reward them and it's really a case of perseverance and not suddenly throwing them in the deep end after a few days training. Research clicker training as well,m all thirteen of my dogs are clicker trained and they each have different sounding clicks, clucks, pops whistles etc etc and they all pick out their own sounds beautifully. Keep it simple, I use five different types of click to mean 5 different things, sit, down, heel, wait, come. Hand signals go with each noise as well (like raising my arm for a communal sit, making the 'policemans hand' for a wait, arms open for come) and these mean that every dog obeys, so once your dogs have got the general idea you can move onto more complicated things and your dogs will be so busy wondering what their next 'task' for you is that they wont notice the other dog at all! And if they do you can always whistle them back with ease!

how old are your dogs? Unfortunatly they may never learn to be off the lead an come back when called. I have 3 dogs 1 of which doesnt need a lead but will walk by my side until allowed to run free and then come back when called day OR night. Yet 1 of my other dogs stubborn will only come back if they feel like it so i have to be extra careful because of this, because like you id prefer them off the lead also. they have both had the same training (plus the stuborn dogs had extra) its just one of those unfortunate things. each dog is different. sorry if thats not what you wanted to here but thats going on my own personal experiances

I would suggest taking them on a lead and keeping the lead with you. When you get to the area that is safe to let your dogs off the lead, let them off. Bring some mini sausages with you in a back that the dogs can not get to and when they are off the lead as soon as they get say 6 feet away call them back.
As soon as your dog comes back give him a sausage. Keep doing this at a short distance a few times and slowly let the dog run off further. eventually (it could take days it could take weeks of doing this) your dog will assciate coming when he is called with something good and will come regardless of if there is a treat or not.
That way if there are other aggressive dogs out there you are safe in knowing that you can call your dog back and clip him back on the lead, untill it is safe for him to run about again.

This is a long process that you need to go through if you are planning on having your dogs off leash. You must first establish a stay command and a be able to walk away without them moving, until you command the come command. Once this is true and by true, i mean they will stay when you are not in their site, and they will stay for long periods of time this way, and come on demand, then you are ready to address the dogs free range come command. It can be difficult if you do not have a good foundation of being in charge. With a good foundation your dogs can be almost limitless to what they can be allowed to do by you, not just the off leash play in a public area. Seek professional help if needed.

you need to train them properly before you let them off. It's all good and well liking them to run about off the lead but to do so safely they have to be properly trained. I heard only last week of a 6 months old collie who ran onto a road and was killed by silly owners who didn't train it and liked it to have a run off the lead. What would happen if your dogs knocked someone over or scared a child or were attacked by another dog, you have no control over them so keep them on the lead u ntil they are properly trained. I would be ashamed to have an out of control dog.

I once saw a training video and it said you have to first give it about 3-4 sessions on a leash. First you have to tie them w/ a long leash (one at a time) and walk around (best if its an open space--like a park). Dont look at your dog and call him once, keep walking and your dog will realize that it has to pay attention to u to know where you're going so you wont leave him behind. You can suddenly stop or turn.Eventually he will realize with one call it MUST obey you. Try not to say thier names alot of times, just about twice. Say it firmly and strongly without having to look at it. If your dog disobeys let him know looking down at it, and make it clear.

You can get from any good pet shop a dog whistle, use this in your garden when you want the dogs to come to you remembering to give them a treat,so next time you take your dogs out and they go off use the whistle and they will come back (have a treat ready).Itried it with my border collie and it worked.

it takes alot of training before you should allow your dogs to run in a field. My dogs always have a lead on when they are outside of our fenced yard. Its much better to be safe then sorry.

Why are you letting them of the lead in the dark. You cant see they cant see, any thing could happen.
I walk mine on the lead at night during the winter, better safe than sorry. You will just have to walk them a bit further on the lead.
