Three numbers added together total 68

First number: n
Second number: n + 4
Third number: 2n
It all equals 68.

n + n+4 + 2n = 68
4n + 4 = 68
4n + 4 - 4 = 68 - 4
4n = 64
n = 16

Going back to our information:

First number=n=16
Second number= n+ 4, so 16+4=20
Third number = 2n, so 2 * 16= 32
Then check: 16+20 +32=68

Terra did the whole process correctly for the following, but I think she had a typo at the end:

11w - 11 = -77

11w - 11 + 11 = -77 +11
11w = -66

Divide each side by 11

w= -6 (not -66)

Okay, I will tell you the answers, but I will explain how I got them so you know.
1) lets call the first number A.
first number=A
2 number=A*4
3 number = A *2. now set up the equation.
A+A*4+A*=68.
Solve for A
A is the first number
now do A*4 thats the second number
A*2=third number

1=16
2=20
3=32

2)11w - 11 = -77
an equation is like a scale. If you do something to one side you must do it to the other. In this equation you want to have only the w on one side and a number on the other side of the =. To do this you need to get rid of numbers on the left side. First lets get rid of the -11. In order to get rid of the -11, you need to add 11. which gives you zero. But remember, if you add 11 to one side you need to add it to the other.
11w-11=-77
+11 +11
you know have
11w=-66
now you need to get rid of the 11. because the 11 is suppoused to be multiplied by the w, you need to do the opposite and divide.
11w=-66
/11 /11
so you get.
w=-66

Try this where x = the first number.

68=x + x+4 + 2x

68=4x + 4

64=4x

x=16

numbers: 16, 16+4 and 16 x 2

numbers: 16, 20 and 32
