Tell them that you suffer from severe anxiety and fear of flying, and are afraid of having a panic attack in economy class....that you think you'd feel better if you were closer to the front of the plane in a more open environment.
Have never tried it on Virgin, but it has worked on other airlines.
Just make sure that you approach the flight attendant at the gate discreetly, without letting other passengers hear you.

to be considered for upgrade you have to dress smartly and have paid full fare in your current class, if you have not yet booked I suggest you try another carrier as Virgin have gone downhill recently, their cabin crew are usually youngsters who are rude and have no wish to do anything other than talk among themselves
