I consider cold calling as a viable tool for getting your message out to those in need of your product or service. I am talking primarily about business to business cold calling. Some people appreciate a more personal approach to doing business rather than computerized telephone calls, etc., That is the way many successful businesses are built.

Cold calling may be a good and viable way of generating customers. There are many factors a company should consider.

1) Customer set - As alluded to in the other answers to this question, there are a number of regulations reducing the ability to cold call consumers. Business-to-business cold calling is still an accepted practice. International audiences may be more open to cold calling. Does the customer set a company want to attract receptive to calls as an acceptable way to find out about new products and services?

2) Uniqueness and complexity of products - Companies with great and unique products may just need awareness and education. The more unique the product, the more likely cold calling could drive results. Complex products may need someone to explain them. Are the products the company wants to sell unique and complex enough that calls would help drive sales?

3) Quality of lists - Picking up a phone book is a bad idea. If a company has a list that represents prospects who are interested and qualified for what you are selling, the better. Cold calling is a numbers game however qualified lists improve the chances of sucess. Does the company have a method to develop a qualified lists of buyers? Also, does the company have a method for capturing enough names that it is worth a cold calling effort?

4) Profit margin of sale - Cold calling is expensive. Let's say it takes 500 calls to make sale and that a telemarketer can make 50 calls and hour. It would take 10 hours (=500/50) to make a sale. Let's say the telemarketer makes $10 an hour. It would cost the company $10 X 10 = $100 to make that sale. A company would still need to make a profit based on the cost to make this sale. Is this product profitable enough to support cold calling?

I would make an assessment based on the criteria above.

Absolutely not unless you have done your research on the person you are about to cold call. As a consultant or when I worked in pharmaceuticals I always was the person who was the new guy introducing myself to people, but I got better at it. You learn that you can't just go up to someone you don't know and ask for the business. You have to do your home work. I investigate the person thoroughly, find out what they like, dislike, where they are from, you know their who'll bio find out what we have in common so when we do meet I can have something to converse about other than me shoveling sales data down their throat. That will get you nowhere real quick, you have to earn a right to get the business. After they see you as a person the client will eventually ask you about your job and your products and try them out and use them in their business. I can't tell you how to be great at sales but a nervous unresearched cold call isn't the solution

No because many residences and businesses have opted into the Do Not Call registry.

Reputable business should not cold call or blanket fax others. Email list rentals from reputable brokers might be a start for you to investigate.

Also, investigate local targeted pay per click advertising on Google.

I would not consider cold calling. Do you like to receive random calls when you have not inquired on someones product or service? I think it gives consumers the feel that their privacy has been violated and may agitate them rather than getting them excited about your product or service. I would recommend a direct mail campaign.

I feel it is a good marketing tool but you need to pay attention to the DO NOT CALL registry list. If you violate it, You will have to pay a hefty fine! I find inexpensive brochures & flyers to be effective means of getting the word out.

Based on my opinion that cold calling (via telephone) is a real nuisance to my business, I would never try to do that to others. I have heard every cold call pitch invented and they are all lame.
