You would first start by stripping or scratching the brass. It is shiny and smooth and will not accept paint. I don't know if there is a brass stripper, but if you scratch it, you need to be careful and do it evenly. Use sandpaper and/or steel wool with a sanding block or similar. It must be even because you'll still have the same amount of surface showing. Then there is a high heat spray paint which is designed for fireplaces and grills, it is usually flat black. If you use this paint, you should do it outside, The paint is very thick, and will show on lighter areas (carpet, walls). I usually set up a shroud to do it inside, protect all surrounding areas, and stick my arm inside to paint. If you do that, then let the paint settle for 5-10 minutes before opening. As for the screen, it will probably be rough enough to spray after cleaning it real good. The beauty is, touch ups are relatively easy, once it will accept paint. The reality is, if you aren't able to do it right, then you are better off living with it or replacing it. A poor job will look like a poor job.

if it particularly is the "actual factor" in an older domicile ...... extremely worth doing. The vintage stuff could have been lacquered, yet not continually using fact it grew to become into the "butler's job " to polish it . Laquered or not , it extremely is a competent concept to bathe it down w/ a liquid paint remover to eliminate any coating & airborne dirt and dust formerly sharpening. Refurbed vintage brass fittings for older residences via capacity buffing gently. some human beings wanted it polished bright( sounds like plastic to me ).& with out some coating ( & no butler ) will coach fingerprints immediately. the well-known laquers used to guard steel can not be utilized at domicile , so leaving it "bare" & touching up on occasion will save it looking stable. in case you elect it lined, could desire to purpose an vehicle or bike save for a sprayed on clean lacquer wash. could have issues lacquered whilst asked, in particular on lamp bases, brass beds & products that are actually not undertaking to positioned on. Brasso & elbow grease is superb & a wax coating is likewise a competent concept as stated. vehicle sharpening compound works nicely if the steel isn't too badly oxidized , does not incorporate chemical compounds that could reason brass to bypass "purple" & is wax based which permits to guard could attempt a marine grant save for polishes/ & protectants that are used on brass & bronze boat fittings. superb regards

If you don't get it super clean (All of the soot & smoke off) the paint will not stick too well.

It could end up looking shabby.
