the correct expression is hijo de puta ( madre-mother is implied since he is a son of whore ) and we ( mexicans ) don´t say it to one another it is just an expression you don´t actually call someone that ( you would get beat up ) it is like saying -son of a bi**h this is hot- you are not addressing anybody specifically. But if someone tells you that you are an hijo de puta that is not a good thing

That expression is NEVER used to describe something good. The person you heard was using it inappropriately.
(Remember the Spanish heard in the United States, is usually not good Spanish)
However, the expression "está de puta madre" IS used to mean that something "KICKS A.S.S". It is still cussing. So usually only young people or groups of men use this expression among themselves.
"Hijo de puta madre" means "Son of a bit.ch". And it is ALMOST always used to offend.

"H-ij-o de p-u-t-a" means son of the bith, It is the worst swear-word. You must evoid to say this. It's very rude and impolite to say it..
"Tu p-u-t-a madre", to reply someone who insults you.
"De p-u-t-a madre" It's an expresion, we say that when something very good happen. For instead, when you read in the news that fuel price get down.

That is very bad curse.
It means son of a whore.. hijo means son,, male child
puta means whore,,
of course madre means mother..
hence,, your mother is a whore,, so you are son of a whore,

Basically it says you are a son of a prostitute and it is not a good thing. Someone was messing with you when they told you it was a nice compliment
