quote:
===========================
Many have wondered just how far the famous "turn the other cheek" instruction from Jesus Christ should go in everyday Christian Living. Does it mean that we must allow ourselves to be defenseless victims of every thief or attacker that may come along?

It's very important to realize the context in which Jesus Christ was speaking. In essence, He was telling those gathered there before Him, as well as us today, that Christians are not to respond to religious persecutors as though they were common criminals. He went on to say, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." (Matthew 5:44 RSV).

Jesus Christ was not prohibiting self defense by Christians in a manner permitted by law. He also said, "When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace." (Luke 11:21 RSV). No "turn the other cheek" for burglars or looters, and by extension, every other sort of common criminal.

You have only two cheeks. After they are both struck where do you go from there? My take on this is. You go to the limit of your ability trying to resolve a dispute, but when you run out of cheeks you need to defend yourself. If its a physical thing go to the police. If its legal sue! I would never advocate escalating violence, wars start that way.

This verse is often misunderstood. If you look at the full context, He was speaking of the Jewish laws concerning justice and revenge (eye for an eye, tooth for tooth, etc.). The verse speaks against taking personal revenge on someone who wrongs us, we are to leave it to the authorities to render justice. So, to answer your question, I have not taken revenge against anyone, and do not seek vengeance on my own.

This is about who is to fight the battle between God and Satan.
Throughout the bible we are instructed to let God fight our battles of righteousness for us. When God is on your side who can stand against you? God is in control. Satan in his scheming lies and deceptions does not suprise God, ever. Unlike us, God never says "whoops" I should have seen that coming.

When we have circumstances in our life that are beyond our control or ability to influence they are opportunities to reflect, represent and honor God in how we handle them. They also give us opportunity humble our self and rely on Him as our provider in all things.

The Scripture which you're concerning (Matthew 5:38-39) is approximately revenge and portion of Jesus' coaching on the undertaking. God's purpose at the back of this regulation grew to become into an expression of mercy. The regulation grew to become into given to judges and pronounced, in effect, "Make the punishment extra wholesome the crime." It grew to become into not a handbook for inner maximum revenge (Exodus 21:23-25; Leviticus 24:19,20; Deuteronomy 19:21). those regulations have been given to cut back vengeance and help the courtroom administer punishment that grew to become into neither too strict nor too lenient. some human beings, besides the undeniable fact that, have been utilising this word to justify their vendettas against others. human beings nevertheless attempt to excuse their acts of revenge via asserting, "i grew to become into in basic terms doing to him what he did to me." whilst we are wronged, in many circumstances our first reaction is to get even. extremely, Jesus pronounced we could desire to continually do stable to those that incorrect us! Our want should not be to maintain score yet to love and forgive. that's not organic--it extremely is supernatural. in basic terms God can grant us the ability to love as he does. extremely of making plans vengeance, pray for people who harm you. To many Jews of Jesus' day, those statements have been offensive. Any Messiah who could turn the different cheek grew to become into not the militia chief they wanted to steer a insurrection against Rome. for the reason that they have been under Roman oppression, they wanted retaliation against their enemies, whom they hated. yet Jesus stated a clean, radical reaction to injustice: extremely of annoying rights, provide them up freely! in accordance to Jesus, it extremely is extra substantial to grant justice and mercy than to obtain it.
