I read this to mean that if one has heard Jesus' teachings (the Word of God) then he is cleansed. I don't see the word "clean" as being free from sin, or even to mean forgiven of sin. As we know, there is more to be done to be forgiven and saved. I think the word "clean" is used here to define the "taught" people from those that do know know of Jesus' teachings.

Jesus is teaching His disciples and has presented the truth claims of the new covenant that will be established by His death and ressurection. I believe that since the disciples already believe that Jesus is who He says He is; that He is the Son of God and that He is the living flesh of Old Testament prophecies of a coming messiah. Since they are under the authority of Jesus and believe the words He has spoken to them this is credited to them as righteousness or being clean before God. Another example of this in the bible is Abrahams faith being credited to him as righteousness.

The eleven faithful apostles had wholeheartedly accepted his word or Messianic message, and for that reason he pronounced them “clean.”
So there were no dead twigs of fruitless unbelief about those loyal apostles. There were no distracting suckers of unscriptural Judaism attached to them. They were undividedly giving their attention to the cause of “the Holy One of God.” They believed him to be “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Matt. 16:16) On still another occasion, Peter said to him: “Look! We have left all things and followed you; what actually will there be for us?” (Matt. 19:27) In the face of such decisions, Jesus’ words, especially spoken to the apostles privately, must have had a purging effect, leaving them in a spiritual condition that was “clean.” All the “branches” that remain in such a “clean” condition could devote themselves in full commitment to the unique purpose of God’s “true vine.” This would work out in gladness for both God and men.

Well.."You Are Already Clean Beacuse Of The Word I have Spoken to You"...
I think it may mean that because of the words he hath spoken you are already aware of the rights and wrongs in lives..The does and donts. Maybe not necessarily meaning words literally from his mouth but his teachings throughout the bible. Meaning we're clean..Pure..We know what we're not supposed to do wrong...If we do it wrong..it's not his fault. If we were to follow his lessons and to follow it correctly we'd be completely clean, pure, great..and, meant for heaven!

The word is Jesus; because Jesus is the word it is by him that an individual is cleansed.
In the scriptures before this one; Jesus makes mention that he is the vine which bears fruit(the fruit being followers), there will be fruit that does not bear anything....and that are those whom God will rid, but of the fruit that bears many, God will purge them so that they may bear more fruit.
By this analogy, Jesus is simply saying that he is the Word, and it is through and by him that we live(because of his sacrifice).

That our sins are forgiven through faith in the word of Christ. Whether we have faith though we won't find out before judgment day when Jesus may tell even those who claimed/claims to be Christians; "I never knew you"!
