this will sound utterly stupid but is probably your problem....

Check your transmission fluid level when the engine is hot.. add Mercon V till it's in the cross hairs.

what happens, is there is a thing called a torque converter.. it moves power from the engine to transmission and uses fluid to do it.. For some odd reason, when they are low on some, it will cause the engine to stall when putting into reverse

If not, you may also can have issues with the idle speed motor, throttle body being clogged, a air leak, or a torque converter problem among other things... check the level first however as I got burned one time by that... and have found two others with that concern since

wow, very weird, sounds like somehow the reverse light switch is grounding out the ignition system, possibly through the neutral safety switch ? with the thing running and in park disconnect the wiring harness to the trans to see if it allows reverse operation, good luck, hope you get it resolved

If it slams off like a mechanical problem then it might be the reverse is warped, or if it just shuts off like you turned the key off you might need to go and spend 60-90 bucks to get your sensors scanned(OBD2 scan)
