I read somewhere that it is because you are not positioned well while sleeping, so then the nightmare happens so you will wake up and move.

They just happen (roughly 1 in every 20 dreams) but only 1 dream out of 7 is usually rememberred every night sp thats 1 nightmare every 5 months or so. Stress can increase this rate though

I remember back then, I used to have horrible nightmares after a traumatic incident. We have nightmares when our minds are not at ease during the day.

Sometimes they happen if you have experienced a trauma, and you are having flashbacks.
Usually, it is your mind reorganizing your memory files and new thoughts from the day. This is the cause of most dreams
