Hi,
I used to run a rescue centre and I would love to be able to answer this but it really does depend on the particular dog. I can on the other hand give you an insite into the differnces between the breeds which might be usesful in a desicion between them.
Cocker spaniels are mostly very payful (quite silly sometimes)! Schnauzers are more activley seeking. By this I mean they need to do things. Walks, Finding toys, Agility, They are quite bright and by there very nature like hunting for things be it toys or learning things to do like agility. They will not be truly satified with a quick throw of a ball in the garden which usually provides enough excitement for a cocker.
With that said. Lets move on to grooming. I worked as a groomer for a while and can see a giant differnce in the maintance of a cocker to a schnauzer. A cocker especialy the red and black are very heavy coated and will need a lot of brushing to keep it knot free. You will need to take it to the groomers about every 6 weeks to have a hair cut. costing about £35 The feet get very hairy and if you dont have them shaved beween the toes and under the pads you risk grass seeds in the foot and sores between the toes where the hair mats and rubs so it really is very important. Ears need constant cleaning and brushing as if left to get greasy and dirty. (they dip in everything they eat and drink) you can get very smelly ears and even maggots if left for a long time. What I am saying is it is hard work. Schnauzers are a lot finer haired and you will only hane to run a brush over them one a week or two. If you have them groomed by a groomer which looks very nice. You will need to do this about 3 times a year. costing about £30. The only bit that get really dirty is the mouth/ beard area. Its a lot less work and you wont need to wash them as often.
With all that said I totally believe the disposition to be down to the individual dog although both seem with the right training, nice, playful, energetic, fun loving, kind dogs. Hope this helps you decide wisely. Good luck :-) Michelle from Northamptonshire

I think schnauzers have a great personality. All the terriers do, for that matter, but schnauzers have loads of energy, very affectionate and loving. The mini's are just small enough, but they do need grooming, so you would need to keep that in mind, but cockers do also.
I've had several schnauzers, so I just love them, but cocker spaniels are nice dogs also.
Whatever you pick I hope you get lots of enjoyment from your choice. Good Luck!

i would suggest the cocker spaniel...a friend of mine has a schnauzer and it can be quite moody!! (if a dog can be described as moody) . The spaniel always seems like a happy little pooch, but there again, dogs are like humans and they are all different, Im sure in the correct loving environment, either would be a lovely dog to own

cocker spaniel's rating by the ATTS American Temperment Testing Society: 81%
Min. Schnauzer rated: 78.6%
I have worked with animals for many manye years, and honestly, I have seen some MEAN cocker spaniels....I truely believe it depends more on the puppies parent's temperment and how the dog is raised. ANY dog can be aggressive and ANY dog can be wonderful. When looking for a puppy, SPEND time. Have it spend time with your kids. DON'T go by breed or looks, go by personality!! Choose wisely and you will have a wonderful companian!

It would vary depending on the particular dog. I would say that generally Spaniels have a better disposition. Both breeds usually need regular visits to the groomer and regular brushing at home.
A mini schnauzer usually will bark more, is very intelligent, more active, makes a better watchdog, and is fiercely loyal and protective.

it depends on how you train them. What are you looking for in a breed? Do you want affectionate, active, but needing some obedience training? Don't mind coat care and grooming?
I like cockers but can cope with their hyperactivity. I bred them for many years.
I like minature schnauzers too and luckily am an ex professional groomer so can manage the 3 times a year clipping or hand stripping. They aren't quite as hyper as a cocker and more even temperamented.

I prefer cocker spaniels, my friend when I was little had a schnauzer and it was a mean, grumpy, ugly little thing. Spaniels are so cute, with their sad brown eyes. Just my opinion though.
