Yes! 18-42 male and female , no exeptions, no deferments except for the disabled and that depends on the degree of disabilty. They could serve in a support position.

Not necessarily!
Draft started out during the sixties and people who where 18 yrs at the time couldn't vote. So if you were 18 yrs of age you were drafted to war but you weren't allowed to vote.
Believe it or not! The Democrats at the time started the Draft during Vietnam. The Vietnam war wasn't a progress for the US and it was becoming more of a political involvement then actual war.
When Nixon took office the war wasn't accomplishing anything and so the war ended sometime early 70's.
People have to understand that the Draft is not the answer, but the answer is to tell the media to get bent.
Seem like the media likes to twist and turn on any issue that goes on in our world. People need to understand that War is going to have people dieing or getting hurt.
But I can't say anything because I'm not a brave soilder who is out there fighting. I honor their courage in fighting for our freedom! And I will continue to bless them with my prayer.

I would not look for this to happen anytime soon Michael. Under the current conditions, if one takes seriously the comments posted here, the military does not want a draft. Is this a true representation of facts? I don't know. While it does make sense that you would not have a comfortable feeling sending a bunch of lily-livered cowards to front line duty, it would seem that if your military was in need of more numbers, a draft would be the way to go. Sadly, the impression I have been getting is that we are populated with a large number of people who want to have all the benefits of a free society with none of the responsibility.

No, it shouldn't. I was in the military in the 70's during the tail end of Nam, I worked with draftees and people who joined the Navy to avoid the Army. The service is better off without them, sullen, angry, unmotivated people who care nothing about the mission, their fellow troops, or their country are a liability we don't need in combat where peoples lives depend on them. Modern warfare is highly technical, requiring the best of our people to meet the increasingly complex challenges, the days when you ran a guy through a ten week basic, handed him a rifle, and sent him off to war are long gone. The problem is not that we need a draft, what we need is more people in this country who are willing to step up and serve. If the people of a nation are not willing to defend their freedom, with force of arms if necessary, then they are not truly free, they are, at best, fortunate.

I am on active duty and have been for 18 years. I am neither poor or underprivileged. Don't kid yourself, the draft is a bad idea, and putting people in the military that don't want to be here only makes life harder on those doing this for a living.

I agree that the draft should be brought back, but with no exemptions. I personally would love to see all the hemp-wearing, dope-smoking, politically correct, know-it-all college punks, and the ivy league trust fund babies forced to hump a mortar around in some turd world dust bowl so they can learn what freedom truly costs.

Why don't you join.
If you make people do something that they don't want to do is dangerous. They will not put 100% because they don't want to be there.
I am tried of people yelling for the draft. Trying to send other people's family to get killed

... No one is listening unless they are really in the thick of things with the troops and their families??
What an obtuse comment!
The military doesn't need warm bodies. It needs skilled, motivated, honorable people to perform a job that can be horrible at times.
If you were a soldier in the field, would you want someone next to you that volunteered or some Joe that is stuck there and doesn't want to be there?

i think it is a good idea.
many countries in the world draft their men for military service and when they complete their term they are posted into the reserves who can be called up to perform active duties. the shortage of military personnel to cater for humanitarian efforts (note : i didn't say war efforts) like peace keeping, policing, etc is putting many poor and under developed nations into irreversible danger, eg. darfur. these countries need civilised, organised, democratic policing forces to help them stabilise. we cannot doubt that the prescence of uniforms help to instill some kind of discipline in any place. the UN is always short of personnel. the US has commited itself to too many wars.
drafting can be construed in a patriotic way by making it a liability of every citizen. you love your country, you serve.

Or, your government could make a start on convincing the next generation of cannon fodder that they will not be sent on wild goose chases like Vietnam or wars of Imperial subjugation and resource conquest like Iraq (and the planned Middle East wars to come) so that greedy capitalists can buy each of their kids and wives 4 wheel drive pointless status leviathans to alleviate their guilt and impotence for what they have done and have to do.
