The universe is a subset of God. Most religious beliefs believe in the existence of a supreme being called God. Even the Big Bang theory hints towards the existence of a powerful being external to the universe who caused the stable mass of the universe smaller than the size of the tip of a pin's needle to explode into the universe we know. This powerful being external to the universe is called God.
