It sure does, but you are not using a barrier method (one prohibition) and if she gets pregnant, you are ready for that contingency and your family.
It's not a well-thought out plan by any stretch of the imagination

Good point, especially in light of the World Health Organization's five-country study back in the 1970s that showed that the Billings Ovulation Method of Natural Family Planning was 97% effective when people followed the guidelines. This is as good as any birth control.
The biggest downfall to the effectiveness of NFP is when couples decide to go ahead and have sex anyway, knowing full well that she'll probably get pregnant. For those of you that mentioned the "rhythm" or "calendar" method, this was the first attempt at NFP, developed in the 1930s, and it isn't very effective. Science has come a long way since then.
Knowing what to look for to determine whether you're fertile or not is pretty easy. In order for the church to be opposed to NFP, they'd have to mandate that couples MUST have sex during the fertile time.
NFP has side benefits. It recognizes a basic difference between men and women: men need sex to feel loved; women need to feel loved to have sex. NFP provides a time for sex and a time for affection that doesn't result in sex, which reassures the woman that she is loved for who she is and not just as a sex object. NFP teaches self control, and results in greater intimacy.
NFP keeps sex special, sacred, and intimate between a husband and wife. She's not just there any time he gets the urge. Good marriages are made better, and lousy marriages are made more tolerable, when the man doesn't feel like he can have her any time he gets the itch.

The Catholic Church Understands The truth of the biological functions of the body and has deemed it moral to use a natural means of deferring a birth of another child. We also understand that a couple may not be able to have another child for various reasons such as the physical condition of mom or the mental capacities of the couple in so far as being a responsible parent.
In using an unnatural means of birth control such as the pill the intent is no pregnancies, it also promotes infidelity or loose living and unfaithfulness. It leads to abortions, it leads to the breakdown of the family and society, eventually to the breakdown of the whole world. I need not remind anyone the state in which we live.
Remember what a marriage is. It is a total self giving of the two spouses, for all that I am and all that I have I give to you for the sake of the beloved. God loves us so much that he wanted to associate us in his creative work in the sexual marital act in creating new life out of love. Thats God like and is sanctity and that is why it is called procreation.
In the language of the body the sexual marital act artifically contracepted is a statement of rejection and it registers at the state of the subconcious. " you have no access to my most sacred intimate place of my being for I no longer give all that I am and all that I have I've cut you off from that place." We as human beings can only stand so much rejections especially from the one who is flesh of our flesh and bone of our bone.

Natural family planning allows the couple to remain open to life, the gift of God.
Artificial birth control closes the reproductive act to reproduction making it a selfish form of pleasure as opposed to an act of love.
Natural family planning calls for abstinence on fertile days as opposed to using each other's bodies for sole purposes of pleasure. Couples are encouraged to pray or do other non sexual type activities on the "fertile days" if they are trying to keep from getting pregnant.
Natural family planning allows the couple to have a say in the size of their families while still remaining open to God's plans.

I do see your point. The main difference is that the rhythm method doesn't use any means but abstinence.
They probably figure that no matter how badly you want to keep your legs crossed, you're going to give in to temptation sooner or later.
Plus, that method is not terribly reliable. Hence the large number of kids in many catholic families.
They let you do it because it doesn't work very well. I think they figure they're throwing you a sop, knowing full well you haven't got a chance to remain childless.

Well, first off. There are no days you can not get pregnant on. You have a possibility to get pregnant on any day.
Catholics are so out of touch with reality it is not funny.
I come from a catholic family. Believe me I know.

Natural family planning does not leave out the POSSIBILITY of conception, whereas birth-control statistically does.

Catholic church gets a kick out of making people watch a calender to plan sex. Wouldn't want any hot spontaneity to occur, that would lead to enjoyment and we can't have that, can we?

That's true - they're hypocrites anyway! As if they or a member of their family have never used birth control!
