put a few drops of vermouth in the glass & swirl to cover inside of glass.
add choice of vodka & your choice of garnish. It's important to use a good vermouth. Don't buy cheap, it's not a substitute for good flavor.

A matter of taste, but...
Put Dry Vermouth and ice in a shaker, shake and pour the liquid down the drain. This is to flavor the ice.
Add Vodka to the Vermouth-coated ice and shake again. Pour into a martini glass and garnish with olive. Enjoy!

I'm with Smartalf. A martini is just not the same with vodka, not to mention "perfect"

You can't, That yahoo james bond notwithstanding, a good martini needs gin, unless you just want to spike your martini (apéritif) so as to get stonkered quicker.
