Because of course they clearly were not seeing the future, they were just putting their religious dogma together to properly control the masses. As you said,if they were prophets instead of storytellers they would be much more succinct,in fact much of the reason that they used such vague imagery that fit their own time better than ours was that mostn early christians actually expected the end of the world within a few lifetimes of the crucifixtion.

Imagine you were a man from 2,000 years ago. You see a vision of modern times and you try and explain it using what you know at the time.
Now try and explain cars, the internet, electricity.
You see, the flaw in your "logic" is you are using a modern base to try and comprehend a past time. At the time, they had no clue what a light was so they described it as a fire. A helicpoter would be described as a "giant locust with wings that roared like thunder and breattplates of steel and the face of man"
Now go back and read revelations again but open your mind a bit and try and remember that John had very limited knowledge of the world.
It would be like asking you to explain a nuclear reactor and the workings of it only using a picture of it.

Revelations deals with the weighty matters of good vs evil. It is a brief synopsis of the future of mankind, not something as trivial as the future of technology. Such little things as material possessions and technology are not as important to mankind as making the choice; for God or against God. Revelations was meant to help everyone make that choice correctly. Deciding what size TV screen you want to buy, probably isn't going to have much affect on your eternal life.

The answer is the prophecies, while specific, are all both symbolic and topical. The symbolism means the wild beast, the frogs, etc. are representative of something completely different but parallel to the concepts presented in the book. And, the book is topical in that it doesn't waste time on details like cars, technology, etc. because the prophecies it reveals deal with the actions of people and groups of people, and the actions of God. But to question the divine inspiration of the book of Revelation is asking for trouble.

Like your handle, no it is not a bunch of gobbledegook told by storytellers . I say that based on the proven facts. There were or over 300 prophecies in the old testament which refer to Christ. He has fulfilled many of these already and fulfilled 29 in one day. The men who wrote these prophecies were men chosen by God and it was God's Spirit which directed them as what to write, these are not their words or ideas but God's. There has never been a mistake yet re the fulfilling of God's prophecies, they could not just be close they had to be 100% correct. This is what makes the Christian faith unique and the correct "religion". No other religion has prophecies that they can referr to as fulfilled. There are more prophecies to be fulfilled as you may well know. Christ's next return "the rapture" is the next prophecy to be fulfilled then the fulfilment of the judgements in the Tribulation period, then Christ's 2nd coming to earth to set up His millennial reign and many other prophecies after that. It's is truth !!!!you can bet your eternity on it!

Figuring that Revelation was written almost 2000 years ago, I don't believe cars were around. But Revelation isn't the only book of end times, check out Daniel.

There was a good special on the Discovery channel about this. If the author saw things like tanks and helicopters in his dreams, he wouldnt know what they were. So he described them as things like beasts or birds. Because that would have been the best analogy he could come up with, having never encountered modern technology.

These items would be as irrelevant to the purpose of Revelation as would be the mention of pants and miniskirts. But for example Revelation shows that man would reach the unprecedented potential for global destruction - something much more relevant to discuss.

Hi truth be told. The book of Revelations was written down by John as it was spoke to him by Jesus Christ who is God Almighty Himself. The book of Revelations contains many parables. God tells us very clearly why He spoke in parables. We read in Mark 4:11-12:
"And He said to them, “To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those who are outside, all things come in parables, 12 so that Seeing they may see and not perceive, And hearing they may hear and not understand; Lest they should turn, And their sins be forgiven them."
God does not intend to save everyone in the entire world. Only those whom He has Chosen.

This is the expression of spirit rather than material things. It is very specific regarding the experiences humans will have to endure.
