You can change at any time, and depending on the state you live in you may have to pay what is known as a short rate penalty (usually 10% of the unearned premium) for doing so.
As to the previous poster's comment about 'accident free', most insurance carrier filings are retroactive. That means if you're accident free for the last X years, you'd still get a discount.
Personally, I tend to 'shop' my coverage once a year, just to see if a better deal is out there.
If you own a house, you'll generally get a discount from using one insurer for homeowners and auto. Even if you rent and have renter's insurance, this may apply for certain companies.

Sure you can. The only thing you don't want to do is let your insurance lapse. Also make sure you, either get a refund of your balance, or just let your new insurance take over when you old insurance is expires.

yes you can change insurer at any time you like, how ever check with your existing company what the exit fees are likely to be before you go ahead.
They may convert you to short term insurance which can be very expensive, they may also charge an admin fee

Before going with another car insurance company, you will have to check with them if they will honor your previous no claims record. Rules might vary from company to company.

Absolutely, but don't cancel what you currently have until the new policy is in place, you don't want any surprises or lapses in coverage.
