Depends on your circumstances - single, married, kids, home ownership, etc.
I would guesstimate around $3000-3300 per month after taxes. Not sure where someone would be $2K from based on annual 42.5. I make about that and my combined fed/state tax is about $2200 per year with the standard deduction as HOH & 1 child, + child care credit, student loan interest deduction, and nothing else. If you go to the TurboTax website, I believe they have an free program you can use for tax estimations.

Most people recommend you make 3 times your monthly rent. A $1400 apartment would usually need an income of $4200 a month. Some places will rent to you if you make only 2-2.5 times the rent.

The salary/remuneration for a particular job is the market value for a particular profession and designation at the city/town where the office is located. Job postings at websites like Monster, Yahoo HotJobs and Careerbuilder carry information about salaries. The Govt Dept of Labor, (www.bls.gov) Bureau of statistics has information about median salaries for different professions and details of additional compensation offered. Other online resources are salary.com and payscale. Your salary will also depend on your educational qualification and how you handle your career. Subtract all of your withholdings for the year from your gross income then divide by 12.
If you withhold the right amount during the year so that you do not owe additional taxes or get a refund you will know how much you make each month.

It depends on what your withholdings are. If you have a pay stub, use algebra to find out what percentage is taken away, and then multiply by how many paychecks you get a month.
