If history took a different turn and women were still property, and you had to buy a wife from her father, how much would you pay and do you think you could get a better deal that way than courting and dating and getting a free range girlfriend like we do now?

Dude, you do like to live life on the edge. The females on here are gonna crucify you for this question. I like it the way it is now, cause I didn't have much money when I found my wife and I never could have afforded her. I would have been outbid by some rich guy that was after her 38DD's. I fell in love with her eyes and the DD's were just a perk.

It depends on which 'olden' days you mean. At one time, men obtained status from their bride. Men competed to pay as much as they could afford, as a symbol of their status. From that perspective, women were not property, but rather a highly prized commodity. Only the most prosperous men were able to afford the highest dowry. And contrary to myth, women still retained the right of consent. If she didn't like you, it often didn't matter how much you could afford. You had to court her, as well as pay her bride price. Personally, I like liberated women. ;)
