it's yummy.
Our green been casserole isn't a "watered down" version of tuna casserole. It's own separate dish.
It is french cut green beans, drained and rinsed with either cream of mushroom or cream of chicken. Mixed together.
After baking for about 30 minutes, then add French's fried onions.
Like I say to my kids, try it you might like it. :) lol

Well, when casseroles made with soup first came around in the 50's and early 60's green bean casserole was considered quite the gourmet thing...and easy to fix! Since then its become pretty standard fare at your holiday table. Sort of like turkey and stuffing! Here is an alternative recipe for green bean casserole that you might like: 11/2 lb fresh green beans, picked over and trimmed 1 yellow onion, sliced and separated into rings 1 tsp minced garlic 1/2 lb exotic mushrooms (or you can use crimini or button)sliced 2 cups half and half 1/2 cube butter 3 -4 T flour 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp ground pepper Saute mushrooms, garlic and onion in olive oil until tender and translucent. Steam green beans until crisp tender, drain. Melt butter in saucepan and add flour to make a rue. Add half and half, salt and pepper. Stir until thickened and smooth. Mix mushroom mixture with green beans and sauce. Put in a baking dish and dot with goat cheese. Bake for 45 minutes in a 350 degree oven or until cheese is melted and casserole is bubbly.

For me there is no comparison between green bean casserole and tuna casserole! 1) Tuna casserole is a meal where GB casserole is a side dish (tho is could be). 2) The tastes--The mushrooms, the crunchy onions, the cream surrounding the green beans make it delightful. And I love when people get creative and add things like crisp bacon, wild mushrooms, etc. Tuna casserole just doesn't lend itself to experimentation.

It depends on the recipes and the little extras that one might add to it. But generally, yes it is a good dish IMO. It is a sort of casserole generally made with french style canned green beans, a canned soup of the cream variety, some add sour cream too, and french fried onion bits on top but this also can vary with ritz crackers, almonds etc. Try a little, its not going to be served every day.

It's not bad; I've never thought of it as a main dish, though - it's just a veggie dish in my experience, so a comparison with a tuna casserole isn't really a valid one in my book.

It is a good, easy side dish to prepare for holidays. I like it, but I wouldn't want it everyday.
If it looks watered down, you aren't making it right. Here is a really easy recipe.
Use canned grean beans, add Campbell's cream of mushroom soup (amount depends on how many you are serving), salt and pepper to taste, and add French's onions to the top, cook until hot throughout.

green bean casserole is great as long as the person that cooked it knows how to make it right, but that's the case with any kind of food in my opinion.

I've often asked myself the same question. It really seems like an old tried and true recipe. Oh what the heck maybe it's time we give in and try it, everyone else has.
