The problem with lightening hair is dealing with the roots. Different hair colors can lift to a certain level also hair dressers - cosmetologists can lighten hair but it tends to damage and dry out hair. Often just putting in highlights of a lighter color not too much lighter than your hair with a conditioning type of slightly lighter lifting color can be very flattering and when it grows out one does not have to worry so much about roots. This can be achieved by obtaining from a Beauty Supply house a frosting cap then pulling it through not too heavy or too light wherever you want highlights such as in the front heavier working to the back lighter lesser amounts of hair or evenly throughout or just in front. Then applying the hair color on the hair. Be sure to use a decent quality hair color as some have metallic dyes in them which may cause problems in the future with coloring, other processes on the hair or permining. Often you can look at the side of the box to get an APPROXIMATE of what each hair color does to your natural shade of hair but keep in mind these are APPROXIMATIONS as all hair is different may be less or more resistant etc. If you are very concerned but do not have a great deal of money you can go to a Cosmetology school and ask for a senior student. I prefer Vocational schools because I know they adhere to the law whereas a private school often cuts corners because their interest is in making money and you may get someone who is not worth a hill of beans who had very little training. We use to get Cosmetologists at the salon who just got out of a private beauty school who could not do hair but were certified. This would never have happened at the Vocational School I attended during highschool. They also often have less clients or patrons such that they will tend to cater to you especially if you go during the day with the highschool students because they want you to come back because they have difficulty getting regular clientelle because they open and close for school and government holidays unlike private schools which can take you in asap usually. I went once to a Private school to get a decent facial because the local salon was booked for several weeks during Christmas. It cost me as much as a salon and I had to instruct the student such that I do not go back. Private schools are ok for anything that is not very intrusive or chemical in my opinion but I would never go there for a hair cut after working with a few from them. But I do go back to the vocational school I attended even though there are new instructors and I always get what I ask for and want at a decent price they treat me like Royalty. I feel more secure going to them than salons where I have had a simple blunt hair cut I can do myself if I feel the mind to do so just totally botched. I know my hair so often I take the time to do it myself because it will save me the money and I know it will not be ruined but there are times I just prefer to have someone else do my hair as it is faster and easier if done right. Also it is a nice luxurious relaxing feeling.

Hey girl! Yes I have done, in High School I got my friend to bleach the ends of my hair, my hair is black/brown (I am black) and the colour came out like a dark blonde or honey blonde but then I went and bought copper sunset and put that over it so my hair ends where a gorgeous red. I would recommend getting a friend to help you or if you're not too confident in that go to a salon but thats always more expensive of course. Um, my hair stayed healthy it didnt break or have crazy split ends etc etc always use a conditioner and steam somethimes with a protein conditioner (u can use egg and mayonaisse-it sounds mad but it works!) and moisturize regularly. That should keep your hair looking good.

My hair is naturally jet black so it's really dark. And then I started dying my hair an even darker black about 2 years ago. I now have half of my hair black, and the other half (the bottom half of it) blond. It looks really cute and unique but the process of getting it to be light was such a pain in the ***. It caused a lot of damage and a lot of and work. My hair dresser has been working on it for almost a year now and it's still not an even color. It's not even the color of blond that I've been wanting yet. It takes a lot of effort to get it a light color so you have to be really patient with it. If you have nice healthy hair don't bleach it, you'll regret it once you see all the damage it causes.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. I've had the same issue. Go get professional help. And it's going to be a process. Go to a salon, ask for "slicing" in a light caramel color. Slicing is like highlights except they do not weave the hair they dye everything they grab. Your hair will be so much lighter. Then put a toner on it and it willl hold the color and come up much lighter after. Or you could ask for a 50 Volume Blonde. Be careful though- It burns the head sometimes, it works, but it is so harsh for your hair. I suggest going for the slicing. Good lucK!

Yes, but if you can, try to have a professional help you. I tried doing this myself and ended up with orange hair. If you DONT have the money to go to the salon, start with a box color a little lighter than your black color, and work it up from there. My hair has been every color of the rainbow and I've had quite a few nasty experiences!

Wait, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO IT YOURSELF, the colour will not lift with homecolouring kits. Go to a salon and ask them to do it for you, they are more experienced with the colours and how to mix it (bleach and dye etc)...
If your hair is naturally black you might wanna have your eyebrows done as well or it could look a bit miss-matched
Good Luck!!

Please dont do this yourself ive met lots of people who had black hair and tried to lighten it. to even get it a litle bit lighter you will have to bleach it first .. think about it can you draw a brown crayon on black paper ? go to a good salon and they will slowly lighten it each treatment, this is probably the best thing to do

Yes, and even with professional help my hair was so fried and damage I had to cut it all off. My suggestion is be very careful and try to keep your hair more brown shaded so its not as bad. If you aren't careful, you'll end up with orange hair too. Not fun
