I apparently have an infection on the ring finger of my left hand, in a cut almost an inch long which I got from a nail. I have had it for about half a week. Despite dowsing it in peroxide and neosporin, it's still there, and doesn't appear to be getting any better.

What I originally thought was a scab formed over it early on. I believe it is actually dried puss, as it is yellow, is depressed in the skin instead of raised, and when I put peroxide or neosporin on it, it softens into a mucus-like substance. I tried removing it when it was soft, but it won't come out, and I don't want to forcebly pull it out since I'm not a doctor or anything and don't know what I'm doing :p

The infected area is sore, and I'm starting to become a bit concerned. Any suggestions, especially ones that are proven effective, would be much appreciated. Thank you to the answerers, and God bless you all!

There is, admittedly, alot of redness and swelling around the area. I have no feaver, and there are no read streaks on my arm or hand. I'm not wearing a wedding band, and I don't want to loose this perticular finger, because, Lord willing, I'm going have a wedding band to put on it here in a few months! Thanks for the answers thus far!

you may have a staph infection. You should not let this go for very long without seeing a doctor. Especially if you even begin to have a slight fever with redness and swelling around the area.

I had a friend that thought what he had on his knee was a small spider bite. He stuck a needle in it and caused the infection to push down even further under the knee cap and ended up in the hospital for a week on heavy antibiotics and then on an IV for almost a month after at home. He is an electrician.

I know how you guys like picking at stuff, and anything that causes a break in the skin can open a person up to the staph infection.

You need to go to the Doc and get some antibiotics before it turns into something a lot more difficult to get rid of. In the mean time I would soak it in some epsom salts to help draw the infection out. Keep using the peroxide and neosporin but get to a doctor.

first off look for a red streak going up your hand to your arm! is their one? if their is go to the Dr asap! if not, are you wearing a wedding band? i hate to say it but if you are you need to remove it and let the air get to it. this is how it will heal if you continue to get it wet and douse it in peroxide it will not have the chance to heal. the puss is it cleaning its self out. stop putting stuff on it for a day or so and see what happens but again if you see any signs of a red streak go immediately to the Dr or ER! witch may not be a bad idea because you may need a tetanus shot?! good luck and happy holidays:)

Infections should be treated with stronger antibiotics than can be purchased over the counter. To improve this problem, you should go to a clinic or see your doctor, to get the proper treatment. A chronic or untreated infection can be truly serious. If let go too long, you could wind up losing that finger. Get your @ss to a doctor, STAT!

Call your doctor or go to the emergency, infections spread and you don't want to get sick over something that could have been taken care of sooner.
