Is music allowed in islam , listening to songs ?

Depends who you ask. It seems obvious to me that anything that will glorify sin or is degrading should not be listened to. Some scholars have the opinion that music is allowed, and others say some is allowed, and others say none is allowed.
I don't recall any verses in Quran about the prohibition of music. Does this come from some hadith?

There are several opinion of Islamic Scholars on this point. The majority say that some kinds of music (IE devotional) are allowed. Some say that all kinds are allowed and some say that none is allowed.

Going strictly by the book, only at certain celebratory times is music/singing allowed...weddings, homecoming of military troops etc.. They do not sing or praise in song at mosque. Like in any religion, ppl don't always adhere to every single rule n so most do enjoy music on a daily basis.

Well I think it is. It gets you confused when your trying to memorize the quran. Instead of listening and memorizing songs memorize the quran. To me it' not worth it.
May Allah guide you on the right path.
* If you're still confused, who do you go to to ask qusetions about Islam, ask them. i always ask my isalmic friend who takes time to daghwa during fridays when i'm stuck.
