My mother is German, so I grew up learning about as much about the socialist democratic system of government there as I did learning about my own. Eventually I came to prefer, at least in theory, the former to the latter. What do you think?

Once again it seems that some of us can't just answer a question objectively. C=thus and so, you don't know what I've read; more importantly, I've was raised with more than the books to learn from, kid. I've lived in Germany for varying periods of time so have a frame of reference to call on that you don't. Don't get slammed.

The Soviet Union was a communist nation. There is a difference between the two, and I wish you'd have bother to learn what it is before you responded, Bob.

There are so many BAD answers!!! And, no, I don't deem the answers bad because they don't match mine. You've given a bad answer if you've offered a 'yes' or 'no' without an explanation; the same applies to those who answered emotionally and to those who regurgitated what they've heard from pundits or their parents or whomever. You know who you are. Grow up and join the discussion; I can't even see you - why would you argue with or try to insult me?

I'm certainly open to exploring the idea, especially the healthcare side of it. America has become close-minded and slow to evolve compared to Europe, Canada and Australia. If we think our form of government is the best there'll ever be and never strive for more ... well then, we'll just flounder and implode like every other empire.
People hear the word "communism" and they think it's a religion or form of government. Noooo, it's an economic system, and if they'd actually READ something like Marx and Engel's "Communist Manifesto," they'd have a clue what said gentlemen had in mind. It may not have worked in practice, but there are IDEAS there of significant value, and we can't write them all off just because they're associated with something other than capitalism.
McCarthy is dead; move on.

as you can see by the answers... Americans clearly have no idea what you're talking about...
Republicans think anything that has "socialism" in it is EXACTLY the same as what the russians had in the cold war and many still have the cold war mentality of "russia is communist and communism is bad and evil"...
we're actually MUCH closer to a socialist democracy RIGHT NOW in America than China, Russia, Cuba or any "communist" country EVER WAS... but we're not quite there...
but, it won't fly... because people only know what they've been told... and they've been told "communism is bad" for 50 years...

"All of Northern Europe (Switzerland, Sweden, Netherlands, etc) are socialist democracies. Because they are multi-party instead of two party democracies, politics are less corrupt and voters have real choices. Their criminal justice system is also far less corrupt. Less crime and more intelligent management of those who have committed crimes.
FAR GREATER FREEDOM THAN IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Check it out before spouting off, you patriots to ignorance. Misinformed attitudes equal violent arrogance."
Great response. Couldn't have put it better myself. I have to say I'm surprised to see all the right-wing retards in here backing up their extremely broken government. They all say this system works?? That's hilarious. Capitalism is one of the most corrupt and and inconsiderate forms of government I have seen. Just about anything would have to be better than this. Every decision our government officials make and vote on is based on getting more money. And that trickles down to the common man as well. Everyone here only cares about lining their pockets, and has no common decency to care what happens to other people in their greedy lust for prosperity. I have considered moving to Northern Europe because of the freedom it offers.
As for your question though, no, as you can see from these other responses. Americans are too brainwashed and ignorant to accept such a change. Not to mention this whole country is run by Zianists and the Saudi's. They would never allow this country to stop caring about money, although it is the "root of all evil".

Socialism is an overall failure. Look at the Soviet Union for an example of the failings of socialism. The greatest problem with socialism is that it removes the incentive to achieve. Why would I work my butt off to get someplace when I am still going to earn the same as that person over their that does mediocre work and has a bad attitude? That's also why I so strongly dislike the liberals because they really are no more than closet socialists.

united statesa.. Democratic status. became the source of the debate at Valley Forge. The founding fathers have been democratic. the human beings who needed a republic purely approximately starved the completed American military out to instruct their factor. Then it became set up as a democracy for the human beings and Thomas Jefferson ended up talking plenty approximately it. Then those losers referred to as the puratins got here in, representing the republic (enormous agencies). They fought for purely approximately a hundred years to opposite the form and each and all the equivalent rights stuff. Now you spot it, they nonetheless attempt to make it a nazi or king james state. yet maximum of what they have accomplished is public. because of the fact of their joker mentality, now many extensive financial industry based entities have extra ability then human beings and surely contradict what united statesa. stands for. united statesa. is meant to be a democracy, yet via corrupt idiots who took unrestrained movements. some issues like the federal government. even nonetheless they seem to be a company. As a ruling physique. it rather is in basic terms a mish mash of excellent human beings and grimy people who help employer over human beings.

No. Our system of government works. Societies and human nature change slowly. Our government is founded on many of the ideals which would be integral to a ideal society. We continue to strive to achieve those ideals. Call it two steps up, one step back. If we survive our own inherent violence and stupidity, we'll one day attain an ideal society, or one much closer to it than what we have today.
The theories of socialism are nice, but in practice socialism ultimately seeks to reduce all humans to one level, utterly contrary to the realities of human existence. This inevitably quashes achievment and reward for far too many, too like oppression, in my opinion.

in the 1930's germany the national socialist workers party was better known as the nazi party. the problem with government is that in theory they should work to benefit the people in different ways. however when you let people and thier free will run them theories become open to interpretations and often benefit the people running the government
communism in theory is in fact the best form of government. where everyone works for the benefit of themselves and everyone else to achieve a more utopian society

Socialism is bad economically, morally, and every other way. It's just plain evil.
A quick example of just how wrong socialism is: under socialism, your neighbor would be able to smoke 3 packs a day, or live on soda and twinkies, or drive 100mph around sharp turns in the rain. Any of these activities would result in your neighbor being unproductive and a burden on society. Socialism would steal money from you to pay for the consequences of your neighbor's mistakes. This is bad economic policy and completely immoral.
It is baffling how anybody can support such a dispicable and evil concept.

I would not support a socialist democracy. Socialism and democracy can not co exist, with out eventually bringing on communism. Socialism by its own definition, is the intermediate step to communism in marxist theory.
Another reason why I would not support a socialist democracy is because it goes against everything our fore fathers fought for, in some cases died for, and gave up their life's fortunes to make sure we as a nation would be totally and completely free of governmental interference in our lives, personal finances, and property.
I know we already have some vestiges of socialism in our government, of which I am absolutely and diametrically opposed to having in our society. I believe socialism does nothing positive or helpful to our country, it only serves to encourage people to be lazy and unproductive. Think about it, why work when government gives you all you need. The responsibility for you and your family has been taken out of your hands, and placed in the hands of government.
I don't know about you, but that scares the hell out of me.
