Hey Jill,
Here are some really good sites. You will spend hours at most of them. There are so many sites now, you need to focus. If you need any special sites (Irish, French, Chinese, Native American), just type the word GENEALOGY and the and you will find places.
Cindi's list is a treasure chest, and so are family search, and several others. Have fun.

There are so many websites available as someone has already copied from Cyndi's List for you and so much information available that it can be mind boggling, but would strongly recommend you take a look at www.familysearch.org the site of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
All the information there is totally free. You can download a software programme called Personal Ancestral File, again free.
There is information on How to Start, Research Guidance and Help.
You can access the famous Family History Library catalogue that lists all of the records there are available from around the world that you can view at a Family History Centre. Again the resources of the Centre are all free and the staff are very helpful. You can find your nearest one on the webpage.
From the page you can also download Family Group Sheet and Pedigree Charts.
It truly is amazing the information that is available on www.familysearch.org and it is wonderful that the Church makes them available for all.
Well done to them and good luck with your research - it is addictive yet very rewarding.

You can get a free trial with ancestry.co.uk if you register with them and supply bank details. They hold on-line census and birth, amrriage and death records which you can access during the free trial
BUT!!!!!!!!!
Remember to cancel the subscription before the free trial is up, or they take the cash without contacting you again!!
Other alternatives include genesreunited.co.uk, which is quite good as you can search for others who have the same people in their tree, and match them up. I got mine back to the 1500's that way - someone else from a long-lost (to us) branch of the family had already done it.
Good luck!

I am using Family Tree Maker 2005. Once you start filling in names and dates etc, you can get a link to Ancestry.co.uk. You can then link to its database with the names you have and it lists who might be in your family tree. You can get some things for free but others you pay for. I have spend hundreds over the years by getting copies of all BMD certificates.

Hello Jill, I am doing an open university course on genealogy at the moment, I do use ancestry. co.UK and ancestry.com you can certainly see the relevant information, but you cannot down load anything unless you subscribe. I also use www.familysearch.org/eng the Mormon site it's excellent you can down load anything from there. If you need any help to get you started I can help you find your family and download the relevant information for you, and it will still be FREE, I need the practice. Good luck anyway Di

The "ultimate " way is to talk with as many of the oldest kinfolk you could, %. their brains good now, because of the fact whilst they're long previous too plenty counsel is lost. Write down as many names as you could. next, look up names in the dying Index's. maximum all "Later Day Saints" ( Mormon ) church homes have kinfolk tree centers the place you could look up kinfolk history and names. that's the "maximum inexpensive" and maximum informative way I surely have got here upon. the human beings at those centers are somewhat effective and well mannered. they have an wonderful volume of counsel and components. i became in a position to song my kinfolk back to the 1500's.

1) Rootsweb mailing lists. But expect to contribute as well as just receive help, that's the game. 2) UK google "genuki" plus your place of interest. 3) "Cyndi's list" (website with tons and tons of links)
