Discard it! The plastic is only there for the packaging. You need to take it off first to stuff the bird anyway. Good luck and happy turkey-ing :)

RE:
Discard plastic insert holding turkey legs?
My turkey came with a plastic insert that is pinned inside the cavity that holds the leg bones togehter. Can I cook it with this or do I have to discard it and then tie the legs together with cooking twine instead? I am scared the plastic will melt.

You'll need to take off the plastic holder to remove the neck, giblets, etc. from the turkey cavity, rinse it out, and stuff the bird if you choose. As long as it's off, it's easier to tie the legs with string than try to get the plastic back on.
I've seen some web sites that say to take it off and others that say you don't have to, but isn't it made of the same plastic as the thermometer? So that should be OK.
Check for a web site for your brand of turkey to be sure, and if there are package instructions, it should say there. Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes. It's good to roast a turkey with its legs tied together. Otherwise they splay out quite ungracefully as the turkey cooks. The plastic is probably the type that can take some heat without melting. Double check the instructions on the package. If that thingy is not oven stable, it will tell you to remove it. BTW, you may need to remove the thingy to take out the giblet bag. Try to reattach it.

Butterball Turkey came with plastic wrap on legs. Can't remember if we left it on last year. People are about half and half on this subject. Planning to leave plastic on. What do you advise?

Leave the plastic inserts on, they keep the legs from "falling off or over sideways" when you're cooking the bird. Cut them off when you are ready to serve the bird. Its makes a pretty presentation on the table, instead of the legs being off. Good Luck!! And don't worry, they do not melt.

I prefer the twine because of my fear of plastic too. It shouldn't melt unless it has a sign on it that says remove before cooking. Also remember to tuck back the wings so they don't dry out!

NO! Leave it in place, it'll be fine. If you take it off, you'll have to buy twine to tie up the legs. Why pay for extra stuff when you don't need to. I suggest watching a video done by Alton Brown, he expains all that.
