i have 3 tattoo machines and the best result is with an aircraft aluminum frame(east coast style from joe kaplan) and disposable tubes. this makes it easier for me and i don't chew up skin. i've had bad experiences with my first machine, i think it was steel, it came in a kit. i guess that should have been my first clue it wouldn't be successful.

i have time machines by danny fowler. they're aluminum with iron yokes but i believe they make other machines with different metals. i use disposables when i have to but i prefer stainless steel because i use 1 1/4 inch grips. it's good on the hands. machines that come in kits are no good, my fowlers ran me about 250 each, i have two of course. they run great and they replace it anytime you have a problem with it that you can't fix.

the aluminum frames some times have a weird sound to them.
i would say invest in a good handmade machine as well as get into a tattoo shop to learn the right and wrong way of tattooing.
you do not want to chew anything up. it could also be the machines you are using that may not be tuned the way they should. i make tattoo machines and i have been tattooing for almost 11 years. you can check my machines out at:

I just got one from superior tattoo I think it was the raven, but I'm not really sure. It is not metal and it is very light to hold, I enjoy using it and because it is so lite to hold (7 oz) I do much better lines and coloring.

I also got one from Joe Kaplin that I like really well also, so I guess it is just a matter of opinion.

Neo tat. The vivace is the best machine I've ever owned and I've had plenty. 3.5 for lining shading and black and grey. The 4.2 for full color. Top notch machine. Can't beat it and if someone says anything bad about them they've never used one. You can get one from eikon or unimax or from the manufactorer directly. I've had more expensive machines but really hands down nothing I've used competes.

Mickey Sharpz are AMAZING machines...but they're not cheap because a lot of artists already know this and there's a high demand *and* for the quality.
