Insulation keeps heat in, or out...it can work either way..;

Well the purpose of insulation is to prevent heat loss, for example insulation in a house and double glazing is to keep the heat already produced from the radiators, log fires, whatever.
It therefore conserves energy and should cut bills in the long run, even though to have double glazing/insulation will cost initially.
A thermos flask employs the same principle, heavy insulation prevents heat loss meaning you can still enjoy a nice hot cup of cocoa on your journey to honolulu or wherever....

Insulation is not related to heat.

Insulation is used to slow down the "transfer" of heat from one area to another. The quality of the insulation is judged by how close to "stopping this transfer of heat" the particular insulation performs. They have established certain measurements called "R Value" as a measure of this heat transfer inhibiting factor. Unfortunately for us, the flamability of many good insulation materials isn't as important to many builders as the R Factor. As a result many places are fire traps.
