We have a mastiff/boxer mix. He gets along grandly with my 7 year old cat. The key is introducing them right. It's a good idea if you can keep them seperate for a week or so to where they know the other is in the house but haven't met. When they do meet, give plenty of treats and love to make the interaction as pleasant as possible. Don't try to force contact. Try to make sure that the kittens being around never turns negative if possible...for instance, don't scold the dog for making the kittens hiss or he may associate them with being scolded. All in all, it takes time but should work out. That is to say, as long as the puppy isn't predispositioned to chasing cats, which does happen! I linked two websites you may want to look into as well, just about general mastiff questions and care. Best of luck!!

I've just put down my English Mastiff two months ago, he was a wonderful dog. I don't own cats, but at his foster home, before I adopted him, they had cats and got along just fine, he was 1 year old when I adopted him. I've also looked it up for you in the Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, published by Barron's and They rate Mastiff's friendliness towards other types of pets as 4 out of 5. So there's no problem with the breed itself.

I don't know how to introduce them properly, but chances are, the person you're getting it from (whether it be a rescue organization or an individual) will have some insight on how to tackle that. If it was me, I'd tire the dog out first with a long walk and then hold one kitten at a time and let him smell it and tell him "no" if he tries to bite it. Apart from that, I'd just give it some time. The cats will probably be afraid of him for a while, maybe a month or so, but it should work out.

Hope this helps.

Good luck and remember to always give your kitties an escape route to a place where they can get away from the dog 24/7 if they want to. Never leave them locked in the same room together.
