I just got a Police cadet position with a local police department, but before it becomes final, I have to go through this intense background investigation. After I give them my completed forms, and list of references, they will call everyone and look into my past. Then I have to take a polygraph test, which is kinda freakin' me out! How can I make sure to stay calm and cool??? I really want this job and I don't want my polygraph results to show that I'm lying. I'm not really trying to hide anything...I'm telling them everything I can remember, but the test still makes me nervous.

What should I do??? Please help!!!

well, don't worry about the test.

First, the test administrator will hook you up and analyze your level of nervousness, and make adjustments accordingly. Unless you are way out of control nervous, the reading will be accurate.

The key thing is just tell the truth.

HERE'S YOUR VERY SIMPLE SOLUTION!!!!!

It's an open secret in law enforcement circles (as well as employers who use polygraphs) that the vaunted "lie detector tests" DO NOT WORK. They rely simply upon the skill of the operator to make the subject BELIEVE that they work. The operator must be a skillful psychologist who is able to convince the subject that the test is "foolproof" and "can't be beaten".

This has been proven in laboratory experiments where subjects have either been told that a new type of polygraph is 100% right, and other subjects have been told the truth, that the polygraph measures certain physiological effects which may or may not be triggered by anxiety, fear, suspicion, or other emotional states, and that the operator has to interpret the results in light of his own observation and judgment based on his training and experience.

Relax, you have nothing to fear, Simply think of calming things and be as truthful (or dishonest) as you wish.

It doesn't matter how calm you are. You can't beat a polygraph test. The tack thing doesn't work. Answer truthfully and the officer will be able to sort out the nervousness from lies. Polygraph tests are actually long and boring things and you will have lots of time to calm yourself. The officer administrating are very well trained and are usually good at setting test subjects at ease.

IF, you, in fact, have nothing to hide, then the polygraph test is nothing to worry about.

Before the actual test begins, the examiner will ask a series of questions to help him establish a baseline for your physical reactions. If he does this properly, you won't be able to tell when the baseline questions end and the actual evaluated questions begin. You are expected to be nervous, and the examiner takes this into account.

Try and stare forward without looking at anybody, and just be sure you answer truthfully, think to yourself about your future and think to yourself that the test will soon be over and once it is, you'll have a good future and will be able to go home, just pretend no one is there, and be honset.

put a tack in your shoe, and while answering EVERY question... step on the tack with your big toe... it'll throw your readings off the charts and they wont be able to tell the difference between truth and lies

If you have nothing to hide, then you will be fine. So what should you do? Just relax.
