I need ground cloves for a recipe. I only have whole ones on little twigs. How do I grind them the right way?

You can use a coffee grinder but clean out all the coffee first.

Also, one time I ran out of the powder and I put some whole cloves in two plastic baggies and hammer them to powder

With a mortar and pestle, but it's hard work and requires a lot of muscle! Otherwise, if you can't locate an electric spice grinder you know those electric pepper grinders? Works just dandy for grinding cloves.

My friend tried this with her food processor since ground cloves are so expensive. It took 20 minutes and still didn't work well.

Try a small spice grinder or coffee grinder. Better yet, look at the spices in the hispanic section of your market. The spices there are much cheaper than the big name brands like McCormick, so ground cloves should cost a lot less.

Pick off the cloves and use either a mortar and pestle, or a coffee grinder. I like the coffee grinder because it works fast and is highly effective. Only problem is that once you use the coffee grinder for that, then you wont want to use it for coffee. Unless you like clove flavored coffee :)

Put them in the sun for a few hours to get rid of the moisture.
Then grind them in a mixer/grinder.
A small quantity may be ground with a rolling pin on a flat hard surface

Like most of the people here are saying, dry them in the own until all fluid is out of them, clean you coffee mill and grind them up.
If you don't have one, I use to place them in a clean handkerchief and go out in my backyard and on the concert bang them with a hammer. it works well.
Not everyone owns a coffee mill or grinder.....
