In the first place, they are different.
Second, not everyone would find it odd. At home, I always put mayonaise on my hot dogs. Hot dog stands on the street may find it difficult to keep mayonaise fresh and unspoiled, out in the open.
I'd bet that if someone decided that a baloney sandwich stand would be a good idea, he'd have difficulty keeping a container of mayonaise fresh. Mayonaise packets would be the way to go, but that might create a litter problem.
A sandwich cart! What an idea. Baloney, peanut butter and jelly. What else?

I get frustrated at times, but in all fairness to your question, I had the pleasure of doing a tour of a small goods plant (Lafleur). May I tell you what goes into hot dogs is prime ingredients, not some of what you have read in answers. Certainly no chicken lips as chickens have beaks. No offal, if anything there are off cuts from when they bone meat for other products. There are other ingredients that go into hot dogs, but that's more in the flavor enhancement area. I can honestly say, the next time you have a hot dog, you don't have to look at it side ways first, just enjoy it. Chris

Look, it just doesn't go, OK?
Actually Ketchup on a hot dog is the worst. Remember that great scene where Clint 'Eastwood as Dirty Harry is standing over a waterlogged corpse and the other "cop" is eating a hot dog. The other actor says how awful the body is, and Eastwood says,"you know what really makes me sick, that ketchup on your hot dog".

To heck with what everyone thinks. Put mayo on whatever you like! Both are meaty mixtures.....both are between bread. Mayo is fine. :)
