Fillings:
There are two basic types of fillings -
1. Amalgam (also called silver or mercry fillings) - Most people think these are soooooo bad because of the mercury or the black color. While both of those are viable reasons not to have an amalgam filling, it certainly is not the most important. Amalgam fillings plug a hole much like a cork into a hole in a wooden bucket. First the dentist has to cut out the cavity, then make the hold a certin size and shape to accomidate the amalgam. It is held in place by a special shape that uses under cuts to create retetion. Also known as mechanical retraction. The problem is the it doe not adhear to the tooth in any way. When you chew, the filling and the tooth move independantly creating small fractures, which over time will cause a postion of the tooth to break off. Most patients come to the office and say "My filling fell out" - but when we look at it, the filling is perfectly in place, and the tooth broke away from the filling. Usually the best solution once a tooth has broken from an amalgam is a crown. So if you are prepared to budget the amoutn for a crown ($600-$1200) at an unspecified time in the future, and would rathar pay for a cheep filling now - then it may be a good option.
2. Composite - A composite filling is made out of a resin based material which actually BONDS to the tooth. There is a layer where the tooth and filling becone one. They move as one unit, reducing the chances of fracture or breaking. WHen a dentist prepares to place this type of fillinf, it requires that he only remove the filling, and doesn't have to cut a special shape or remove any extra healthy tooth.
The composite filling is more expensive than an amalgam, but has a better value in the long run.
QUestion 2: A dentist can do braces an invisalign if he has taken CE courses to teach him how. Invisalign has it's own course and exam that a DDS must pass to use it.
Becareful with ortho - look at the JAW function not just teeth placement.
Good luck chewing!

According to my last dental bill, 1 filling was $130.00. I have insurance tho so I only paid like $40.00. I would expect to pay $500-600 for a crown, not a filling. It sounds like your friend got screwed!

Fillings should not be that high. This could be a porcelain filling(inlay) your friend is talking about. Fillings usually are $120.00 to $250.00 depends on what material is used. Yes, any dentist can provide Invisalign treatment, they have to take their course and be certified.

Fillings are $45-$85 for members of this Plan. That's
60%-70% less than non-members pay.
Click Find a dentist first, then look under fee schedule.
