I have a 5 year old female cocker spaniel/dachshund mix, named Rosie, I have had her for 2 years now...I just got a 2 year old female yorkie from a friend of mine last night. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on making the it easier on both of them to get used to each other...thanks for the help

Now would be the perfect time to teach your
'old' dog new tricks..Nothing says loving as much as teaching her new things..and is will enhance her security as your baby..
if she already knows obedience commands, then teach her fun things, such as roll over, shake hands, etc..
Teaching is parenting..and dogs love it! whether or not they act like it..

What you have done is to bring a new dog in on Rosie's territory. They should have been introduced at a neutral area. An area that neither one of them call home. Rosie will probably be the dominate dog since the second dog came into her territory. With time they will get used to each other. If there is fighting try to let them work out their own issues unless there is actual damage to one or the other. There fights can sound like the death of one or the othe but just watch them to make sure one does not kill the other, which is possible but unlikely. It is best that you let them work it out between themselves.

Rosie will be very jealouse of the second one and will try to push her away from you cause you belong to Rosie. Pet both dogs at the same time so that Rosie and the second one will see that you have accepted each one equally. You must resist the urge to pet the new one more than Rosie.

I have seen households that have to separate their pets cause of excessive fighting. Which I hope is not the issue.

i would watch them extremely closely..cocker spaniel's as well as dachshund's don't usually connect with other dogs if they haven't grown up with them..a training class may help but i think if u give them time together under a close eye , they may grow accustom to each other. I suggest starting it off slow with just a few minutes together and then letting them play longer. But if there is a change in behavior and your cocker mix gets mad remove the yorkie..And if all hell breaks lose the yorkie may have to leave...

Get them both spade if they are not already. Two females in the same household are notorious for fighting. If someone has a female dog it is recommended their second dog be a male. Spaying them may increase the chances of their getting along because it cuts down on the hormonal changes that can cause problems between them.

Just spending time together will get them accustomed to one another. Its very important to spend no less time with Rosie or change her routine. If she becomes jealous of the new dog, it will be much harder to get them to get along.
Dogs need to have a hierarchy in their pack. They will establish this on their own. Of course you are going to be the pack leader, but there needs to be a second in command. Many people feel its unfair to treat their dogs differently, same as children. However, you need to treat the top dog as if she is the top dog. Examples include feeding her first, letting her choose the first spot to lay down, etc. By respecting the hierarchy you will avoid confrontation.

You really have to give them time together and show each of them equal attention so they know that you like the other just as much and they will see that you arent threatened by the new dog and that should help the old dog.

That brings up the pecking order when more than one animal are put together. One is the "BOSS". It's the same when you introduce a new fish to a tank.

Just keep them together. They will work it out. Don't give to much attention to the new dog while letting the other one know it's o.k.
