I have a three year old son too, and for Christmas we are making him a dress up box. Essentially a box full of costume pieces to play pretend. I've got a fireman's hat and coat, a chef's jacket and hat with a few cooking tools, a cape, swim goggles, a cowboy hat, bug wings, a doctor's jacket and stethascope, a dog costume, a lion costume, and some little bits and pieces from the post halloween sales. A lot of this stuff can still be found at toy stores or thrift shops.

I think $100 is fine for christmas.... Yes, you will probably not get him everything that he wants or that you would like to get him but i think in the long rum it does not matter. Growing up i had christmas' that i would love to re live and i didn't get more than a doll wrapped in a news paper. Christmas is not about getting gifts and that is it.... You need to show him that is it a lot more than that. Also, at the age of three they will out grow toys and clothes both fast so what is the point in getting something that cost $160.... Our son will be 1 this year and i will be spending $150 max on everything all together. You don't need to spend gobs of money to achieve the goal. We live on 1 income too and that is just what you have to do sometimes. They will have a birthday coming around the corner too so.... Good luck!

If his room is full of toys, I would prefer give something he will use... like clothes for example... or a book where he'll learn letters, colors, numbers, shapes... not more toys. What I have noticed with my boy is even if he has a full box of toys, he plays only with some of them... I can tell which ones he prefers and which ones he doesn't play with... and he is 3 too...

Puzzles, drawing pads with crayons so he can be creative, at that age almost enything educational is good for him. With the crayons he will also learn his colors, and if he's colored blind you will find that out before he goes to school. Puppets are a good toy for childredn with imaginations, he can put on a puppet show for you!! Its so much fun to watch, and he could invite his friend to join in too and you could have the moms over for coffee and cake. Enjoy him now, this age is special. Best to you both.

Playdough- Not only can you mold things out of it but you can use the containers to build up see how many it takes before it falls down. Great for learning to count. Also you can reinforce colors with him.
Mr. Potato head. Having him change the eyes, mouths, ear. They have a mr. potato head that's safari. monkeys, ears, mouth, elephant trunk.
My son recieved many items for his birthday however these two he played for hours with more so then with the other toys. Plus the added bonus is it's not a noisy electrical toy.

My son is 3 and is very smart and creative he likes remote control things. I'm getting him a mini micro remote control car. They are not expensive and will bring a lot of joy to any little guy. They are a little bigger than a dinky car. Cost about 15.00. Also my son likes books like "Where's Waldo and books with pictures where you point out things to be found (I Spy) . Flash lights are always a hit and the new one that's out that doesn't take batteries you shake it, is assume!!! He would love it.

Maybe some child-sized outdoor tools, lots of kids this age like to pretend they are doing "Mommy or Daddy" jobs. Depending on his interests, you could get him a wheelbarrow, snow-shovel, lawnmower, or rake. Also, my son was obsessed with vacuming, he loved the toy vacuum I got him when he was that age--it really worked too. Good Luck! : )

My son is the same way, he loves legos, I also get him construction paper, colored pencils, little googilie eyes, pipe cleaners (a bunch of different colors) some clay, etc... All these things enable him to use his imagination and be creative at the same time~ you will be amazed with the things he will make.

Ask him what he likes to pretend best. if is is house try a vacuum or tool set to "fix" things. Also mine love to color and "make" things. I got mine (2 and 4) coloring kits for their birthdays. They love it. They each have their own coloring "spots" and their own coloring "stuff"
